I put my 1156 CPU into an 1155 socket...HELP!

Well, I'm an idiot. I got impatient and wasn't careful enough-- I ended up putting my intel core i3 1156 processor into a gigabyte mobo with an 1155 socket. When I tried to turn on the computer, everything turns on (mobo lights up, cpu and system fans turn on) for 2 to 10 seconds and then shuts off. It boot cycles, meaning it stays off for like 10 seconds and then tries to power on again without me pushing the button. This process will repeat (I imagine) indefinitely until I switch the PSU off.

My question is which parts do you think I smoked? If I went out and bought a new (correct) CPU could I install it into the same mobo do I risk smoking the new CPU?

IMMEDIATELY take the cpu out of your 1155 socket. You COULD have killed your cpu and motherboard. I would try getting a really cheap i3-2100 off of a forum or ebay or something, try it in your 1155 motherboard, and see if that works. If it works, your probably good to go. Try at your own risk! no, because there is one specific pin difference between lga 1155 and lga 1156. take it out imediately, as the pin could have been bented.

Since the bottom of LGA CPUs is flat, there is nothing on the CPU to bend LGA socket pins with.

But since when SB came out, 1155 mobos had a warning sticker sayin to not install 1156 cpu's, there has to be a risk of shorting something. I still think your motherboard will be fine though.

One would need to take out the LGA1155 and LGA1156 electrical spec and compare pinout to see what changed between the two. My guess is they relocated (swapped) some signal and ground pins to make the socket incompatible with little to no risk of catastrophic failure.
