So, now that Tiger Direct has the new Gen3 chips up, they have much lower prices than Newegg. So I'm wondering what would be the best choice for a new build. At $10 less should I go ahead and get the new i5-3570k, even though it has less of an overclocking potential?

I'm sure it'd be better at stock speeds than the i5-2500k, but seeing as the i5-3570k supposedly can't overclock very well, in theory, you could overclock the i5-2500k higher than you could an i5-3570k making it better. So is the i5-2500k still the better choice? Also, is there really any need to overclock or would I be fine leaving either of them at stock clock?

Also, though I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes, I've noticed that while the i5-2500k uses IntelHD 3000 as it's IGP, the i5-3570k only uses an IntelHD 2500. Again, like I said, not sure if that'd make a big difference to someone using a standalone GPU (such as GTX 580 in my case), but just a thought.

So which would be the better choice, assuming that the Gen2 CPU's don't drop any lower than that by this Friday?

Thanks!

Get the Ivy Bridge chip. The theoretically less overclocking potential is not a big deal unless you've got your heart set on >4.7ghz.

i just ordered the 3770K this morning with a cooler master cpu cooler :bounce:

get the 3570K... yes they do run hotter but intel has raised the TJ MAX TEMP for the ivy bridge cpus to 105C instead of 95C for sandy bridge.
of course u still shouldnt try to go above 95C but u shouldn't be afraid to raise it to 90C or 95C like u would be with sandy bridge.

the ivy bridge has actually more overclocking potential than the sandy bridge, it's just hotter. multiplier limit was raised to x63. u just need better cooling.

and for ur question to leave it at stock speeds, if ur going to do that dont waste ur money on the 'K' series, buy a regular one for cheaper.

i got this cpu cooler with the 3770K order this morning, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

Agreed. Glad I waited. When I saw the prices on Newegg I almost went ahead and got the i5-2500k. Now thanks to Tiger Direct's $210, and the responses in this thread, I just purchased an i5-3570k. I don't think we'll be seeing the i5-3570k for much less than $210 any time soon. And the i5-2500k may drop to $200 still...but this just seemed like too good a deal to pass up.

Now, anyone have recommendations for a good motherboard?

Anyone know how long that coupon code is good for on TD? Might as well get it, imagining a bundle would be about the same, and I don't see any bundles....

That's what I got for my 3770k i'm picking up in a couple days.

The Asus Sabertooth and 77 deluxe boards are also good... just have slightly different features (Sabertooth that plastic protection deal and the Deluxe has bluetooth).
