For the price difference of around $2, with the same specs in every single way and the difference only in motherboard and processor, which is better for gaming and doing things like UDK or 3D rendering?

On the z77 side, it's an Asus P8Z77-V with an i7-3770k. On the x79 side, an Asus P9X79 with an i7-3820. To clear things, I do not think I will be upgrading the CPU anytime soon after purchasing. And even if I did upgrade, I don't see myself spending enough money for a 3930k or the coming Ivy Bridge Extreme that will replace the said processor.

I guess my question here is would there be any advantage in getting the x79 platform over the z77 platform if I won't be upgrading to a more extreme CPU? Should I be content with the 3770k and spend the $2 on iTunes or something?

My guess is that I will purchase my system around August-September, if it makes any difference.

Solution
If you're placing some heavy multithreaded workload on the CPU for a long period of time and routinely, you may want the 3820 and X79. If it's just a possibility and only an occasional thing that you're doing the rendering and building, the 3770k will be just fine as well.

Personally, I'd go with the Z77 and IB processor. Either way, get a good CPU cooler.
I was looking for a blue on black color scheme, and fell in love with Asus' boards. But suppose I won't make changes to the motherboards, will there be any noticable change from an i7-3770k to an i7-3820 when in use for emulation, 3D rendering, and Adobe programs?

The i7 3770K has an integrated graphics, the i7 3820 does not if this will make a differences for you.

The i7 3770K gets really hot when overclocked compared to the previous SB or SB-E chips, in terms of performance, both CPUs should perform similarly.

Z77 is about $100 cheaper than X79.

X79 overheats crazy bad as well. Even 4.3/4.4 Ghz needs liquid cooling and ram cooling.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Seeing as I can save further by getting a different z77 motherboard, I might just do that. I'm only starting 3D work, so I won't be doing a lot just yet, and the 3770k seems to be sufficient for my needs as it seems. In the end, gaming is also still my main priority for this build.

Should I come to need something with more horsepower, I'll get the x79 platform. Thanks again for the help, everyone.
