Yep, it's a 1kb file.

Localhost is mapped to 127.0.0.1, which is the same map as the laptop.

The protocol, network and services files all look the same too.

(Just thinking wow I never knew this existed within a computer!)

If you are fairly comfortable with windows explorer then it isnt a big deal.

This is the target we are going to aim for.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 192.168.0.1:80

Goto start run and type regedit
The registry will appear.
Wait there for a minute because I need to reboot in XP so that I can follow along with you.

we will only be working in the left pane for now and each section will be a lower folder until we get to internet settings.
After clicking on internet settings the
Proxy server should be in the right pane at that point

Sorry It wouldnt let me post more than 3 times in 10 minutes.

At the very bottom of the editor it should say
MyComputer|HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Some where on the right side you should see the rest of the proxy server line

I've not got a proxy related line.

The internet settings has a bunch of other stuff in it. Then the right hand pane has
- default - value not set
- ActiveXcache - c\windows....
- CodeBaseSearchPath - CODEBASE <http://.....>
- EnablePunyCode - value = 1
- MinorVersion - value = 0
- Urlencoding - value = 0
- WarnOnInternet - value = 1

Edit: woops wrong directory I'm in machine - let me try again. Right now I've got it. What next?

I've got the disk.

I think I might have to disappear you a bit to go and eat, do you want to post your cunning plan and then I'll get back to you?

Thanks for your help, massive help.

Im just posting this here so I dont forget it
Dont do it yet

Restart the Windows XP PC in Safe Mode.
Run Regedit.exe to open the registry editor.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant
Click start in the right pane and modify the value to 3.
Restart the PC and port 80 should no longer be blocked and you can use http with any browser.
