Question I'm unable to 'upgrade' to Windows 11, so what happens when Windows 10 support ends ?

My older AMD motherboard and CPU apparently do not support Windows 11.
So what happens with end of Windows 10 support in October?

Will it be safe or practical to still run Windows 10, or will I be forced to invest in essentailly a brand new PC?

I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.

You'll get less updates to windows 10 basically less driver support for less programs

What are the specs if it's am4 it's doable.

You just need a Ryzen 4000 or 5000 processor.

First gen 1600 don't work.

Ryzen 2600 work on gigabyte bios.

Thanks. Wasn't aware of the $30 option! So Microsoft will still officially support and provide updates to Win10 even though its discontinued?

2nd Gen Threadripper 1950X
ROG Zenith Extreme MOBO.

Yes, but only for 1 year, at least at this point. I would not be surprised if it is offered again next year... the beginning of the subscription for the OS.

Your motherboard supports windows 11.

ROG ZENITH EXTREME BIOS 2201

Says support for windows 11.

Update all your chipset drivers etc before updating the bios all can be found on the website.

It's not officially co compatibility but Asus has patched it out.

As 2000 series was officially supported seems to be removed now but still works.

1000 series has tmp 1.0 doesn't work with windows 11. Or package 2 of windows 10.

2000 series has tmp 2.0 which windows 11 supports.

Ryzen Threadripper 2950X would be your best bet.

What will happen on expire date?
---NOTHING---
Your pc will continue to function as before.
New windows 11 capabilities that are introduced will not be available.
Your need for external backup protection will still be there.
You will still be exposed to email scams and wonky web sites.
Most virus/malware infections come from social engineering.
You will still be hounded to upgrade to W11.

So long as your pc still does the job, it is reasonably safe and practical to continue as is.

Aside from no security patches or bug fixes sure it’s completely safe. Something like Spectre or meltdown happens again it’s no worries. Hopes and dreams keep your PC safe.

We have some experience with what happened from Windows XP, 7 and 8 EOL.

Windows Defender Updates will continue to work fine for years. Emergency OS patches for newly discovered severe security issues have happened after EOL but they are rare.

Per Google policy, Chrome will no longer be able to be updated 1 year after OS EOL. There was an exception made for Windows 7 when support was extended an additional 2 years due to the pandemic, but then they decided to discontinue 8.1 support on the same day so that only got 1 month after its EOL! Given that MS Edge is based on Chromium, that will stop being updated at the same time.

Firefox will get a feature-frozen ESR version supported for at least 4 years, but as fewer and fewer people will be using it over time and reporting bugs, it won't be as well maintained as the main branch and will begin to work progressively worse.

Your machine should run Windows 11 unsupported just fine for some time but as this combination is untested, you get to be the guinea pig alpha tester and discover any bugs firsthand.

It would be a good idea to test drive some linux distros to see if you can tolerate them and do your work with them, especially if your Windows 11 can get borked at any time. Fortunately most can be live-booted without installation, so you can both try many to see what you like, as well as keep one around to boot from in case of emergency.

Just a small addition, I have a Ryzen 5 2600 on an MSI motherboard (X370 SLI Plus), and it runs Win 11 just fine.

Actually it updated itself from 10 to 11 randomly in the middle of the night years ago. I might have clicked on something that made it did just that, but if Windows decided that my 2600 could run Win 11, then who am I to argue about compatibility stuff..

its actually more the motherboards.

as for 5060 12gb that would only be possible on 3gb chips on a 128 bit bus unless theres another design they have made with gddr6 ( possible unlikely) we could see 2 versions of a card.

3gb gddr7 isnt widely usable yet
