Question Incorrect cable. Please use the dual link DVI cable that came with your monitor

I saw an older thread about this but wasn't able to find a solution.

I just got a new graphics card and it doesn't have a DVI port like my old one, only display port and HDMI.

My monitor (Acer GN246HL) only has the DVI port since the HDMI port stopped working years ago.

I thought that buying a simple DVI to Display port cable would make my monitor work without issue, but that's not the case. (BENFEI DisplayPort to DVI 6 Feet Cable, DisplayPort to DVI Adapter Male to Male)

I can actually use the monitor, but it has a box on the screen that says "Incorrect cable. Please use the dual link DVI cable that came with your monitor".

Is there any kind of adapter or anything I can buy to make this monitor work with my graphics card and get 144hz?

Edit: I think I may have found a solution. I guess I need something that isn't just dvi to display port, but dual link dvi to display port such as this

Edit: please ignore the following - look at Glenwing's post / link. (Looks as though the wiki specification below is misleading or wrong for this case, sorry about that!)


If the wiki specification of the standard is correct, nope you are not going to get 144hz on that port:

Video signal	Digital video stream: Single link: 1920 × 1200 (WUXGA) @ 60 Hz or 2560  ×  1600 (WQXGA) @ 30 Hz Dual link: 2560 × 1600 (WQXGA) @ 60 Hz or 3840  ×  2400 (WQUXGA) @ 30 Hz Analog video stream: 1920 × 1200 (WUXGA) @ 60 Hz

Do yourself a favor and buy a new monitor that has a DP connection. The HDMI connection is for "televisions" or A/V. You'll get better resolution out of the DP connection, which was engineered for computers.

That cable you purchased looks like a DVI-I cable, an analog DVI cable, not a digital DVI-D cable.

Thank you very much! Was able to find an adapter that people in the reviews are confirming works. Did not realize this was so complicated but definitely learned a lot thanks for that helpful info!
