Installing CD-Writer or DVD-Rom with DVD Burner

Hi-

Please explain how I can connect my internal CD-Writer and my internal DVD Burner. Which one is the master and which one is the slave?

Or, Is it okay to keep a CD-Writer or a DVD-Rom with a DVD Burner, because I would like to use the two available front bays on a desktop computer?

I will be grateful for any help you can send.

There isn't a right answer. It makes no difference as to which device CD or DVD is Master, just as long as the other is slave.

If you now have 1 x CD-ROM and 1 x Hard drive: they will most likely be individually connected to IDE socket 1 and 2 on the PC. Your existing CD will currently be set as Master.

Designate one as Master and one as Slave... doesn't matter which. Now
remove BOTH from the PC and look at the back. There will one section with a
jumper in it... you need to look at the drive (underneath, or actually on
the back) and see where the jumper needs to be for the PC to recognize one
as as master and one as a slave. Set one in the master position, and one as
the slave (tweezers come in handy!).

Replace them in the PC, connecting the power cables and ribbon IDE cable.

You can have three CD/DVD drives in a single PC if you only have one hard
drive.... or if you have an extra IDE Controller card, you can have two
more! (That might be overkill for extra CD/DVD drives if you only want/need
a single hard drive!)

The one set as Master will probably appear with the lower drive letter in
Windows Explorer .... although you can reassign drive letters to your whim
if you so desire.

Hmmm, really? It could just as easily be the slave on the Primary IDE!
50/50 as to which the manufacturer will use!

I've also seen a preconfigured PC come with the hard drive as Master on the
Primary IDE and the CD ROM drive (and just those two drives) installed as
the Slave on the Secondary IDE.

Thank you for sending a reply to "Hardware discussion."

Note: I will have to replace a DVD-ROM or a CD-Writer.

I just installed a CD-Writer on the IDE Secondary Slave. I would like to replace my DVD-ROM with a DVD Recorder/Burner.

I only have two 5.25 bays.

Note: I have an IDE Primary Master for one hard drive, an IDE Primary Slave with nothing, an IDE Secondary Master for DVD ROM, an IDE Secondary Slave for a CD-Writer. Which one will be used for the DVD Recorder/Burner?

And, since I have only two 5.25 bays, will I be able to play DVD movies with my new DVD Recorder/Burner instead of using a DVD-ROM, together with a new DVD Recorder/Burner?

Speaking as an Upgrader, the topic of Master/Slave drives has already been answered.
HOWEVER, I would recommend setting the hard drive and DVD drive on the same port, assuming you are using a standard IDE interface, and setting up the CD drive on the secondary port. The Hard drive and DVD drive will probably be the closest speed match and will give you the fastest responses, whereas the CD drive will probably have the slower access times and Read/Write speeds.
