I can't help but wonder if Intel aren't just a bit afraid of the Athlon 64. And have trouble with their own next part. Why else should they do what looks like selling Xeons as desktops CPUs ?

Then you must be born UPSIDE DOWN.

I think it's bullshit. Prescott will have the double amount of transistors than Northwood chips (not only cache). That should translate into a significant performance increase, very possibly more than Althon XP -> Athlon 64.

I'm no Intel fanboy, I just wouldn't underestimate them...

LOL the Prescotts gonna give the Athlon 64 a run for its money I assure you of that. Its gonna get really exciteing in the semiconductor industry, very exciteing indeed.

intel would have had to start planning this long before they saw a64 benchmarks, could have just been planned as something to stall in case a64 got delayed.. we don't know, but seriously they didn't just pull this out of their ass last week, some planning had to go into it

They must be afraid of losing potential Prescott customers to the A64 in the intervening time between September 23rd and whenever Prescott rears its head, otherwise they wouldn't be releasing the P4 Extreme Edition. As for whether they are worried about how Prescott will perform against A64...who can say?Our benchmarks of the A64 (FX or otherwise) are sparse and of the Prescott, none-existent.
Methinks some patience is in order.

Last thing I read was it's going to be released in Q4 this year. So that's at most three months later. In that little time AMD won't be able to ship that many Althon 64's. Plus, comparing benchmarks will be available soon and if Prescott is good people will want to wait just a little longer...

What's going to be really interesting is the evolution afterwards. More precisely, how high will Althon 64 and Prescott clock?

True. But Intel recognises the importance of winning the PR war. They do not want to lose the performance crown to AMD if at all possible even for such a short time as a few months. Also, people do tend to get impatient, especially when there is no fixed release date for Prescott, so they may not be prepared to wait and opt for an A64, even if they were attracted towards Prescott (if indeed they can get hold of an A64, as you pointed out).A lot of people are of the opinion that you can always be waiting for the next big thing in this whole pc malarkey so you just have to commit to something at some point and accept the jealousy and disappointment you will feel in the future.

Yes.Intel said that the P4 Extreme Edition will be physically available as an OEM part in 30-60 days, which is probably no longer a time than it will take for the A64 to be physically available in any real quantity. The market is not going to flood with A64s after September 23rd.
