For anyone who wants to know, the RAM was $250 and originally rated at 1600MHz 7-9-9-25-2T
Cooling was $80. CPU is partially unlocked SBe, $270. Board was $170.

I recently helped my brother put together a new pc:

i5 3750k
212+ evo
ASRock extreme4
ballistix sport 8 gb 1600/9

We initially tried only changing the core voltage to 1.150 and clock speed to 4.4ghz. It passed 10-15 minutes of prime95 (blend). Windows then failed to boot after installing some software, so we bumped it to 1.2. It passed close to 20 hours of prime95 blend with temps peaking in the low 80s. However, my brother just informed me that he received a BSOD shortly after boot after hooking up an additional monitor.

It seems that prime95 testing is of little use. Since we are not using offset, the voltages should be staying at 1.2 afaik. Could it have something to do with leaving speedstep/sleep states on auto? For now, we moved the vcore to 1.250 and have not even tried prime95 testing. Going to see if he has any more problems under normal usage.

Thanks for any input.

Oh wait, update on my machine (for a better RAM clock).

The problem might actually be the video card. I know that on my desktop, after I hooked up an extra monitor to my 7770, memory clock stayed high, temperatures increased, and it would also crash and recover sometimes. As soon as I decreased my VCCIO back to 1050 (had it at 1100), it stopped crashing. Maybe it has something to do with this, no idea. What are your other voltages set at? On X79 chipset, increasing VSA and decreasing VCCIO often solve the problem.

Hi guys, I have a 3570k and I'm wondering about overclocking. My usual temps are 80 degrees F idle and 100F load. My case is a very effective cm storm scout :) if I were to overclock, what would be a good starting point? My mobo has a auto clock of 3.9ish ghz when possible if that helps.

Oh, that doesn't sound good. I have a sabertooth z77 motherboard with the stock cooler, but it's supplemented by four intake fans.

Well that's unfortunate. Guess I've got some waiting to do 🙁 It is really fast right now, though. Considering my system is only about 4 months old

Yeah, the 3570K is plenty fast for almost everyone's needs at this time.

Heh, all you noobs with Ivy and Sandy bridge. Smithfield master race reporting in.

i'll bump it to 3.6 later.

Its a cpu at 2.8 ghz stock. 3.2 is still good. The thing holding me back in MC is my GPU.... AMD x600...
But it also goes up to 97c sometims. mostly in videos. minecraft cant max the cpu but Youtube can.
Its all weardness.

i mentioned my loop on the 3930k rig but in my i7 920 rig's cooling it a hodge podge of water cooling kits. specifically a mix of a thermaltake big water dual bay i tore apart and combined with a corsair nautilus 500 with a swiftech water block.

LOL you updated very badly. I am no where...
