Around the same performance for the same price but with better overclocking performance and better power consumption and integrated graphics, NOT a worthy upgrade but there isn't a reason to buy a 4790K now.

Edit i like the new boxes though ha ha

Edit again i knew i could find something bias in anandtech's article notice how they don't use a 4790K but a 500mhz slower CPU from Intel instead at least on some tests?

The reason to still buy a 4790k is how cheap the rest of the components are. The mobo's and ddr4 RAM are a lot pricier for skylake CPU's

But adding fixed pipelines should be easier (I imagine) than re-working the EUs (for example) or re-working the IMC (which they have, I think) and everything else that entails actual "uArch improvements". So adding that is just stop gap tech being bundled.

Re-phrasing, I'll take at least a new instruction set over a fixed pipeline any day. Fixed pipelines have their days numbered by default with how technology moves nowadays. Case in point: I really think Sandy is a great CPU still, but do you think QS is still relevant? H265 is being used now and like you say VP9 is getting more traction. QS is biting the dust and is just a piece of junk inside Sandy now.

I do get your example though and upgrades when stuff does not work is needed, but fixed pipelines are not an upgrade reason. At least, not for me. They're nice to have, but not the core of the matter.

Cheers!

So the reviews are out, i've seen some motherboards for sale, but now i can't find them. I'm guessing today isn't the launch of skylakes k processors? Or it is and they won't be available till later this evening? Every review site is saying todays the k processor launch. But i can't find a single k processor to buy. That said, the reviews are out so the launch would have to be close right? Though i doubt, intel would allow reviews to come out weeks before the launch and not day of i'd imagine with nda's now a days. So i guess is this normal do processor reviews drop weeks in advance of the actual cpu dropping or it is released today and i just have to wait? Much obliged.

As I wrote before "Intel is not really interested in desktop i7 and Skylake is not optimized for that. Both the node and the architecture target mobile and (specially) servers." However I am disappointed by those desktop Skylake chips. E.g., I expected about 3x higher IPC gains over Haswell on x86 legacy!!!

14/108?

Also now i'm even more confused. I can buy a prebuilt pc with a skylake chip but i can't buy the chip by itself? I can buy the mobo but i can't buy the chip?

So it is coming out today then?

Did some more snooping figured it out newegg posted some pre order dates

08/14 is the day i guess.

GRRRR! I went to Amazon.de, and they have i7 6700K processors for sale (3 left as of this posting). 423 Euros. When you subtract Germany's 19% VAT tax, that's roughly $375US. But Amazon here in the states has no i7s in sight! I've been regularly refreshing Allstarshop, MA Labs, Microcenter, Outlet PC, Superbiiz, NCIXUS, TigerDirect, Amazon, BH Photo, Amazon, and of course, NewEgg. I've already purchased an ASrock Extreme6 Z170 mobo today, but I can't find an i7 6700k to plug into it. But in Germany, they have it... Guess it's because the big todo is in Germany. Hopefully we will see 6700K processors for sale here tomorrow.

I'm upgrading from an AMD 720BE, so Skylake is definitely a worthy upgrade for me.

Update: Amazon.fr also has it... but not Amazon.co.uk , or amazon.it

NewEgg has some Skylake CPU/Motherboard bundles available for pre-order, with the release date listed as August 14th, so you might be waiting at least another week or so before you can get a CPU.

Yup, I noticed that. Strange that they will sell z170 mobos right now, but no processors. Maybe I need to contact cyberpowerpc and see if they will sell me just a processor.

It was interesting to watch NewEgg throughout the day. First nothing listed for lga 1151, then a banner on the processor page about the Gen6 processors that links to a bunch of bundled deals that you can't order, then the 1151 list populates, but with just the bundles, and a single i5. Then the motherboards appeared, and so I snatched one up in case they sell out fast. Hopefully they don't release them at 3AM so that I miss the boat and end up having to wait several more weeks. (I already purchased everything else, so I'll have a complete gaming rig, sans processor...)

Presumably Germany got first crack at them as they're hosting Gamescom where the chips were announced. It looks like it's going to be a week or so before they're going to be available in the US if Newegg is anything to go by.

makes sense. i'll wait a week then no point in coughing up 430 euro's. That inflation has me a bit worried about usd prices.

Reminds me when i was looking for a 980 ti g1 on amazon it was priced at 800 dollars with a tag that said 500 dollars in savings. Ridiculous.

In Germany, along with everywhere else in Europe, the VAT tax is included in the price of items. In Germany, the VAT tax is 19%. And so that 430 Euro price tag includes 19% VAT tax. The real price is closer to 348 Euros, which is roughly $379.

If Skylake doesn't come available today, Toms should make a few calls and get to the bottom of US availability, and put it in an article. EVERY review site said that Skylake was coming available yesterday. But it seems the retailers got a different memo.

I have to say i expected about a 5-7% increase in IPC and that is what we got really. Lets hope for Zen just so it might drive the 1156 boards down a little. They do overclock quite nicely and to be honest if you are on sandy i know i'd upgrade, heck the improvements haswell done alone in HT would make me upgrade if your running a I7 sandy.

Then again you could always make excuses to why you don't want to upgrade however. But if you are on this thread we both know you guys aren't the typical PC users. :)

Earlier today, I *almost* ordered a 6700k from Amazon.fr. I got to the final stage of ordering, and the overall price was just about $400 after applying the exchange rate, shipping fee, and export fee, and it would have been here in 5 days.

But here's the thing - when I did this, they had 8 left in stock. I just checked again, and they now have 11 in stock! So the Skylake river is flowing well in Europe, but here in the US, our Skylake is a drylake.

There is a glimmer of hope... Newegg now has the i7 6700k listed as "coming soon", and they have auto-notify. Here's to hoping that a little more patience will save me $50, and the potential frustration of having to wait for an i7 from France to arrive (assuming the i7 comes in stock tomorrow).

Still, I wish one of the many news sites that proclaimed the "worldwide" release of Skylake on Aug 5th would do some digging with their sources and tell us what is going on with what seems like a botched US release of Skylake. If I knew for sure I had to wait two or more weeks to buy an i7 from a US retailer, I'd spend the extra $50 and buy an i7 from Amazon.fr

But I am a little worried about return/warranty logistics if my processor ends up DOA or dies within the warranty period.

Yeah you and me both, i'm sitting here twidiling my thumbs with my new case, hopefully new ssd and mobo come in soon. The lpx ram i wanted to buy went out of stock so i guess thats a good thing if it comes back in stock before skylake is released. Still, i hate the fact everyone said August "5th" It's out. Reviews are out you could by the motherboards, but no chip. Oh well, i'd rather save the 50 bucks and appropriate it towards some new rads or some games or something.

Well as an american i feel entitled, to getting everything released here first. Or am at least accustomed to it, most things release in n/a first usually. Though i don't know much about trends in cpu releases.

As an Australian I feel entitled to get something released here first. We normally don't even get stuff made here released here first.
