So I made a grave error with my current cpu. Last week I went to install the new processor I got (Ryzen 7 3700x). Arrived dead, not working, so I sent it back to the manufacturer. I cleaned off the paste on my old cpu (ryzen 5, 2600). In testing to see if the new processor was in fact dead, I reinstalled my old Ryzen 5 with the limited thermal paste on it to see if it would work. It did, so I identified the issue. The only problem is, the following day when I woke up, I seemed to forget about the fact that I removed the thermal paste on it. I have been running games for about 1 week with almost no thermal paste on it.
Well behold today my computer randomly shut down while in the middle of a game. Screen goes black, I get a USB disconnect noise, and I cannot use my computer until it is restarted. I pulled the old CPU out and face palmed pretty hard. It smelled like burning metal and the fan and CPU was super hot. Felt like I was on a linus tech tips episode. This random restart happens pretty much every time I open a game now, and sometimes even when I am just on my computer. I am waiting for my new processor to arrive, but I just wanted to make sure that I indeed actually accidentally fried the thing and it is not some other issue with my computer.
Side note--- All of my CPU and GPU temps are completely normal when I am on my computer. Figuring that it was the lack of thermal paste that killed it.
