My PC is behaving very strangely, I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. I suspect the motherboard is fried, but I'm not sure, and I'd like to determine exactly what the problem is before I sink time and money into replacing a part.

Operating system is Linux Mint 19.

Behavior

  • When booting into BIOS, the mouse input would stop working every other second or so
  • When booting into GNU GRUB, the keyboard input is similarly periodically unresponsive
  • When attempting to boot into OS, a few times I've gotten this glitch visual:

  • Other times when attempting to boot into OS, it power cycles in a loop without ever showing something on screen
  • One time upon booting up, it went to this very strange looking glitch visual:

  • I booted from GNU GRUB into memtest, and it ran the whole suite for a couple hours without showing errors:

Solution
I'd suspect the video card as the most likely culprit. I'd start there and swap it out with a known good one. Hopefully, you have an old one laying about. You can also try pulling one RAM module at a time. In my experience visual glitches are most often the GPU.
