First time building a computer, so any advice would be great.

Pretty good...

MB - 970 chipset is fine, but the 990 responds much better to overclocking (which I would imaging you will plan on doing since you list the 212 EVO).

MEM - No need for the faster speed modules. Look for DDR3-1866 CL9 1.5v modules (or DDR3-1600 CL8 / CL7)...

SSD - Try to find a way to fit one into your build now. Crucial M500 or the Samsung 840 EVO are great budget minded choices.
