the thing i like is people were im at have known that this was coming.
and they still cant drive. i have seen cars in ditches all day long
one car behind my shop, you could walk up to it and the rear bumper was at head height 8O and only one wheel on the ground

that makes my day   I HAVE TO LAUGH!!

and then there are those with 4x4,s who think (ICE)
no problem i can still drive in this. WRONG

after this $hit thaws i will have a bunch of window motors to fix.
and wiper motors to replace, and front end work to do

and yes we still have geniuses who throw hot water 8O on their
widows to try and thaw the ice off.

if you look at gw,s pic you will see no footprints.
thats not snow its ice

be back in a little while.

me making fun of myself?

Yep. You owe me 5$ though, since my hamster sat next to my keyboard and died when that picture came up... :?

seems he wants to optimize current hardware and software.
im all for that.

everybodyelse wants to jump to the next level, without
seeing what can be done with current stuff.

i understand taking it to the next level. thats evolution.
carmack seems reluctant on that part though.

thats what suprised me about some of his statements.
That surprised me too. Yet, i don´t doubt what he´s saying unless i find a good reason to. He wouldn´t be where he is if he was stupid.

Good point. Developers started work on Crysis a long time ago. What operating system do you think they were using? Some alpha release of Vista? I bet they worked on XP. It would be really weird if a program developed on XP didn't support XP for users too...

Oops, this ended up on a different page than the message I was replying to and it's not clear what the heck I'm talking about. I think DX10 games will HAVE to work on XP for the next year or two because they are developed on XP with tools designed for XP, such as Visual Studio.Net 2003 or 2005. The 2005 release of VS.Net isn't even very usable right now, we're still waiting for a service pack that would make it work properly on Vista. You can expect most game development in 2007 to keep happening on Windows XP.

First of all, before I read this I didn't know John Carmack and I don't have anything against him whatsoever.

He does look like the ultimate nerd and with his money one would expect that to change but so what if he does look like that? It doesn't define who he is.

the most earliest noted 3d game
What a laugh, it's called the first!
If John Carmack and ID software didn't make Wolf 3d, we wouldn't have graphics accelerator cards or direct X. PC Gaming just wouldn't have been a big scene.
So if this one guy wasn't born, there wouldn't have been an Nvidia or ATI or any of that??? Your telling me that the whole world is so pathetic that we couldn't even get to the geforce 1/2 era without this one guy? Get over yourself.

@sirheck: I looked very much like your son when I was still a little boy. I was just skinny as hell.

Solid freakin' ice! 😀

LOL! Man that's pretty funny looking. We sent you the cold from out here (was about -40F/C last week, now it's about 2C/35F here, MMmm warm)

Just wish it would snow more.

Of course 3 weeks ago it was a little warmer. 8)

BTW, on topic, as if it needed to be, what is it with all the Big Devs coming out of the woodwork? Now Gabe's panning the PS3 and Praising the Wii;

But saying that Vista is so messed up that the MAC is the upgrade path, that coming from a game developer !! 8O

Nevermind the snow, how's ur PC's temps in weather like that? The closest we get here where I live is like -2C... I saw snow twice in my town, when I was 1 year old (1981 - can't remember though - i've got one shot memory) and then in 1996 - and it's the once off snow not thicker than 1cm. Both of these days, the town came to a halt...

Looks like you had a nice chrismas!

Oh, and you´re officially invited to my funeral.

with DX10, OpenGL and DirectX have gotten closer than ever (yes, M$ has finally become able to clone OpenGL). As such, HLSL and GLSL (the shader languages for DX10 and OpenGL, respectively) now map pretty closely.

Moreover, there are Free 3D rendering APIs that can switch from one to the other almost seamlessly (see OGRE).

Last, I'll remind you that the 360 DOESN'T use DX10, but a bastardized DX9 - as such, all 360 titles that come from the PC have to be ported, whether they are DX9, OGL or DX10 based.

It´s actually the other way around and quite sad to boot.

I guess he hasn't seen the Crysis trailers. 75% of all games in development are DX10 titles. The only shite game that isn't is his Quake Wars.

Meh. The Dx9 crysis trailers I've seen look just as good as the Dx10 ones.

The whole Dx10 thing is looking awfully similar to the Dx9 thing when the 9700 PRO was released... everyone was scrambling for Dx9 cards and 2 years later the Dx8 cards were still giving great service because the visual difference between Dx9 and Dx8 was almost undetectable from a player's standpoint.

4 years after the 9700 PRO came Shader Model 3.0, and OpenEXR... the first real tangible visual feature that those older cards couldn't display. And it's still hardly a 'must-have', I mean SM 2.0 cards are still (and I'll reckon will continue to be) viable for a while yet.

I'm still waiting to see a tangible difference between the Dx9 and Dx10 codepath before I jump on the 'must have Dx10' bandwagon...

reading this makes me wonder if you even played a DX8 game then tried a DX9..
try geting half life 2 or counter strike source and force the engine to use DX8, and we'll see "how undetectable" is.. 😛
