I agree, this is totally unprofessional behavior, and there is no excuse for it.

Congratulations! I used to come here all of the time for benchmarks and advice. This completely transparent and financially motivated piece of "opinion" has changed my view on Tom's Hardware. I'll be looking elsewhere as my primary source thanks to this tool unless somebody higher up at Tom's steps in and says this article was inappropriate and rebuffs him.

Logical fallacies aside. (except one)

I will be keeping my current card until it makes sense to me, to upgrade. If I keep my old tech I won't have to pay as much to use it since I already own it. Once I feel I can get a sufficient experience to justify the cost I will upgrade. The games I play right now, and plan to play soon, are no less fun because they are not ray traced.

I think this may be a case of certain people placing more/less value in their money. One quote I love to trot out, covers a segment of the population. The, "more money than brains club" :Jay Leno

This brain-money quotient must be on a curve.

And I'm 1oo% confident I can use this money for better things than getting ray tracing in a few games. In fact, I personally, will probably wait for the die shrink and hopefully lower prices it brings. Unless the 20 series drops and develops well

I've been coming back to THardware for years because I believe(d) you guys are some of the most professional reviewers and thinkers (tech wise) on the web. After reading your article, I'm starting to question your integrity, sir. You should take an hour and read this comments section. Also, maybe next time run your article by your peers first. I'm sure they were as shocked as most of us by your opinion as an ''unbiased'' journalist.

Did pre order BUT did it smart, pickup on a company that has no downsides if i don't pick it up IE will be able to see the reviews w/o risk of loosing the money if the cards dont deliver.

Can we just remove this article and not look back? This quite an embarrassment and very poorly written with many contradictions.

None alive today will ever see me spend so much on any video card for any purpose. Perhaps that just means I am not a computer game player, but it could also mean I value other things more. When I buy more costly items I consider what alternative items I could buy for the same money, including things like car security systems, home monitoring hardware, a more comfortable sofa, details cleaning and waxing of my car for 2 or 3 years, etc.

Game developers need to add software features that equalizes all game players as if they were all using identical hardware. As a home economics decision for example it makes no sense to pay double price to get a slight marginal increase in performance. By the time software catches up most hardware is already obsolete.

Right. I am so glad to see those RTX 2080TI that I can't contain my joy. I am so excited I think I am going to buy 2 or 3 of them.

I've been coming to Tom's for a long, long time for detailed reviews with hard data so I can be an informed consumer. If this is the direction this new editor in chief is taking Tom's then i'm out.

You just lost yourself a reader of 15 years. I used to trust the content here. Thankfully there are plenty of other websites and YouTube channels to get Tech reviews. I hope it was worth it. I look to the day your website is gone for good, so it cannot spew such tripe from a shill.

AMD is not better , look at the Vega Prices ... had the prices been normal no one would ever touch a nvidia card below GTX 1080 Ti , the whole market will ignore 1080,1070 ti and 1060 all together and buy the VEGA Cards.

Unfortunately game developers have no such luxury unless they're indie developers. Publishers want a product in a certain amount of time. period. They'll publish first, patch second to reach that goal. It's one reason we have so many zero-day patches. Publishers are even reason for content cutting (and content cutting for the specific purpose of future or immediate DLC.) Game developers just don't have the luxury or resources. You'd also get those with high-end cards upset if the games were written completely for the lowest common denominator.

Jeez, did NVIDIA pay to write this article ?... At least let the benchmarks come out before you recommend that people throw +1K on a graphics card...

@feelinfroggy777
You mean sell used 1080ti for like $400 and pay another $800 to get 2080ti which will likely be maybe 20-30% faster in most titles unless new RTX stuff is added ?

In 2-3 years maybe, but currently it looks like very poor value, even for highend.

So what is the site's stance?

Hardware staff are still under NDA and testing the cards with many many electrons ... and hammers !! ... the drivers are being finalised ... Toms Hardware will release an official article once the NDA is lifted ... when ... I know not!!

But I am not an official spokesperson ... I am a humble (but fearless) moderator ... using a Hercules EGA graphics card as I type !!

Part of my last sentence was a solid lie.

Hurcules EGA... thems some mighty fine antique graphics... still RGBi unlike VGA or our now digital signals (in which they can force encryption or device certification lest we all be pirates and try to steal the signal at that point.) Are you sure you don't want to use the Hurcules monochrome instead? (I forget, did Hurcules even make EGA cards?)

Its a sad state of events when nobody cares about their product. I'm sorry to hear that we over here missed some potentially good content. Did all of it make it up on the German site? If we believe that this op-ed reflects the mindset of NVidia or nothing from the so-called EiC here, You aren't even getting a fair chance to inform the rest of us. It is indeed a sad state of events when those of us who didn't want to believe there is a bias here can entertain such thoughts without hesitation.

(As a side note, here in the States, I think most of us are only familiar with Mercedes Benz, first and foremost as a luxury car maker (although some of the C-class makes you wonder) and, for some of us their commercial trucks.)

Hey there all!

Firstly, this is an op-ed. It is an opinion piece, and opinion pieces are intended to draw distinctions between two disparate sets of thought on a given subject. While a great many of you have passionate views on this matter, it is critical to remember that Tom's is host to a significantly vast number of factional and even contentious opinions on hardware. It's a big part of what makes our community so extraordinary and not just simply a big bloc of fanbois for one given brand or another. We welcome and celebrate differences of opinion, and you'll find tons of factional disagreements like this in our top categories in the forum on a daily basis.

Because of that, and since in the forums the code we live by is that civility is compulsory, we have to insist that ad hominem attacks not be made against any individual. Accusations of "shilling", intrinsic bias, or incompetence are not helpful or well-founded, and violate our guidelines against such. Those same guidelines protect you and your ability to espouse your opinions on preferences in our Builds section and beyond in the community.

That said, if you do disagree with the op-ed, let us know! State your assertions and back them up with fact. Avoid logical fallacy, skip the ad hominem / personal attacks, and engage. Even with minority opinion, there's folks here in our community who will go toe-to-toe with you, and every last one of us is improved immeasurably for the fact that we can have epic, heated discussions here without devolving into bandwagoning or hate-fests. Some of the best threads we've had in the past have been brand vs. brand, or a new tech that's suspected to be a fad but roils the public.

Keep it civil, keep it on topic, and keep it respectful!

Thanks all!

-JP

Opinions are great, everyone has one along with their personal likes and dislikes and or BIAS.

However it's not in the best form to recommend a GPU based on speculation before any real valid tests are out so it would be based on facts.

With the last few GPU's that were released we went through the same things, GTX 1070Ti, Vega 56 and 64.

None actually performed up to what the speculations were.

I am still laughing over the GTX 1070Ti..... LOL

The really sad part was even some of the reviewers cooked the results to make the cards appear to be better than they actually are.

As time went on however the real uncooked results have been posted here and there.

In the Past, Tom's Hardware has always stated this was an "OPED" by using parenthesis in the title, and stating it was. But they no longer do that???? Perhaps you should go back to that so people don't get so upset.

Thanks for the leavle headed respons JP. Always the best.

While I don't disagree witht he opinion of the author nor do I think he is a paid "shill" (I have been accused of that many a times and am still waiting for my check) I do not agree with either article in and of themselves.

I just don't think Toms hardware should ever do articles like this. They have no place in a site designed for and supported by enthusiasts. We are not some mainstream media conglomerate who needs click bait. We are one of the largest tech sites on the web and have been around for over 20 years now. Whe have seen the rise and fall of many companies and we knew about things most normal people didn't, like Creative Labs having a superior MP3 player to the first iPod.

My opinion is that we should avoid any articles like this and stick to what enthusiasts want, cold hard facts. Thats what we have always done and should continue to do.

All this article does is tarnishes our reputation in the community and abroad and creates the view that we are paid for by either side. It is one thing to be called sponsored when we use facts by the hardcore fanboys. Its another when the article makes normal level headed users feel we are.

And this is coming from a lowly unpaid moderator who has followed TH for a very long time. I honestly miss the articles that were so random but were about hardware like the good ol mineral oil cooled PC.
