Question Laptop Suggestions - Work

I currently run a HP Envy x360 15 Ryzen 7 as my laptop. It's fine as a laptop really, works as I'd need it. But it's heavy, big, runs hot and ultimately it's way too much laptop, bought at a different time in my life when I potentially needed the portable power. Travelling with it not fun, my job mostly revolves around research, and I have a very new, powerful desktop for any hefty work I do on Unreal, Premiere, gaming ect.

So I'm considering selling this laptop and getting something else, so I'm asking for any suggestions. My specifications are:

• Needs to be smooth at running a lot of chrome tabs, snappiness is always appreciated
• Lightweight, nice size (13" or lower)
• 16gb Ram would be nice, I have a horrific amount of chrome tabs open at once during working hours
• Webcam, quality isn't much of an issue
• 2 in 1 would be nice potentially. But performance is preferred
• No more than £1000 (hoping to sell mine for around £600 as it's only 2 years old and in almost new condition)
• Windows is preferred as I have some applications I need to run at work that are mostly made for windows
• Doesn't need to game but being able to play Civ V might be nice, game is quite old now so I can't see that being a struggle for most

I would look for something with a Ryzen 6000 in it. They are quite efficient, and their IGP is way better than Intel's, so some light gaming should be possible.

If you would consider 14" then my favourites are the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X 14 and the HP Envy 14. The Envy 14 however is still on the older 11th gen CPU's so I would pass on that for now (should be updated soon). These are still very light and portable.

The Slim 7 Pro can be had for just under £1000 with 16GB of RAM and a Ryzen 5:

If you want something a bit cheaper then the Dell Inspiron 14 and 14 Plus are a bit cheaper. You can get the 14 for £750 with 16GB RAM:

The 14 Plus is a little over budget at £1079, however that does get you an Nvidia 3050 graphics card.

A 2 in 1 is available for £879 if you go AMD. The Dell's are good laptops, but I would say the Lenovo and HP are a little more premium in their builds.

The Dell XPS 13 is a very good very light 13" laptop but it's significantly over budget with 16GB of RAM. If you were to go Intel then only go with those that have the Iris XE graphics if you want to play Civ V.

Unfortunately there are other very good very light ultrabooks available but their processors haven't been updated.

I can easily drop the need to play anything on my laptop, I so rarely use it to play anything it's not worth the extra cost and potential heft

I don't think you'd have problems carrying any of these, they are all relatively light. I think to play Civ V any of these integrated GPU's would do that as long as it's not the older Intel UHD graphics. The newer AMD Radeon integrated graphics such as the AMD Radeon 660M are preferable over Intel Iris XE. However you don't get Thunderbolt on AMD but it doesn't sound like that's important to you.

If you preferred a 2 in 1 then the Yoga 7 14 is £1000 for a Ryzen 5 6600U (Zen 3) and 16GB of RAM. That should be more than powerful enough for what you want and comes in at a reasonable 1.4 kg. I carry a 1.55kg 14" and find that pretty easy to manage. It's cheaper than the Dell XPS and I don't believe the NVME drive is soldered so it could be replaced later if you needed more space:

I would have also recommended the Acer Swift 5. That's very portable at only 1kg thanks to a magnesium alloy chassis and it's also pretty sturdy. If I remember correctly the 16GB version was £1000. Unfortunately though like the Envy line it's CPU's haven't been updated from 11th gen and I don't know when that will happen.
