Hello, I am in the market for a large multi-purpose monitor. I currently use a 20" Viewsonic CRT, but I just don't have the room for it anymore and I really want to go Widescreen.

I am actually am a Home Theater electronics dealer and carry a full liine of Residential LCD's & Plasma's in the 37" and up range. Unfortunately for me, video isn't yet my forte and I would like some help.

I use this mainly as a pc monitor for everyday office use and some gaming, plus I plan to connect an XBOX 360 and also DVD (maybe blu-ray) player to it. So I want something that looks good with video as well. I like the idea of residential displays that have good scalers built-in and have many inputs, but I don't know what the con's are to using them as a PC monitor -
If money didn't matter - and nobody gives me any real reason not to, I think the NEC listed would be sweet, I love NEC plasma's and use them regularly in my home theater designs. I am concerned that 40" may be just to big and unfortable to use daily??? I don't know

Here are the models I have been considering:

Planar PD370- 37" LCD HD Display with HDCP, 1080p resolution, 16:9, 10-bit Genesis Faroudja DCDi, TrueLife MADI

NEC SC-40 - http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=0f348826-796e-4366-8145-ecfcb2600204

Sharp - LC32D62U - http://www.sharpusa.com/products/ModelLanding/0,1058,1832,00.html

Samsung LNT4065F - 40" 16:9 LCD HD grade, 1920 x1080, Super clear panel, 10 bit processor, ATSC tuner, 8 ms response time, 12000:1 contrast ratio

I have also considered the 28"
viewsonic VX2835WM & the
Hanns.G HG-281DPB

The Planar is a pretty doable option as well with a decent price for 10-bit and that size, but I think 28-32" would likely be more comfortable to use, so any comments on the Sharp, viewsonic & Hanns.G would be helpful as well.

The Samsung is the cheapest of the large displays, with 10bit processor - sounds good?????

I also read alot about the TN panels being the cheaper, lower quality of the panels, But i don't know how to tell what type of panelt he display uses???

Thanks for the advice

I have my PC connected to an older 40' Samsung 720p screen. It has a 5ms response time and the picture is fantastic. Supreme commander has never looked so good!! Oddly the game seems to run faster than on my 20'. These screens can now be picked up in the UK for 600 ish pounds.

Try the above link to pixmania but you will find it much cheaper elsewhere.

I don't really know of any LCD HDTV using TN panels; at least not from the major brands. Most HDTVs use S-PVA panels which produces true 8-bit (aka 24-bit) colors.

The NEC SC-40 seems to be using the superior S-IPS or H-IPS panels which explains the relatively high price. Their stuff tends to on the higher end of things. I bought the 26" NEC LCD2690WUXi LCD monitor and I am pleased with it.

The Sharp Aquos HDTV series are generally very good, the only exception that I know of are the 50"+ LCDs. They generally have very good picture quality, color and black levels. However, they expanded the line to the "lower" end (below $1,600) so I'm not sure how those models are.

sorry I did not realise you were looking for a TN panel. I was suggesting this as an everyday model for general computer work. I noticed you asked about 40' being a bit large..I must admit that I bought the LCD in the link because I find it more comfortable to use.Once up on the wall I can sit back with wireless mouse and board an can see all comfortably from a distance. The real problem comes with attaching the HD player.I managed to get an excellent 3 way hdmi adapter from an US ebay shop..it is seriously well made for the money. It means alot less cables hanging down. I am not that efficient with terminology so sorry if my reply was a bit naive.
