A friend has an essential 866. After a power failure in his area, the
machine will only boot to safe mode.

Someone has looked at it and told him he has a blown capacitor on the
motherboard. The tech says he can see that the capacitor has swelled.

Assuming the board is not repairable (?), what would be a good
replacement mboard? According to the GW site, he has a Jabil brand
board.

Assume that the board cannot be repaired. If the board is an ATX board, any
Socket 370 ATX board will do. If the board is a micro ATX board, any Socket 370
micro ATX board will do. As a practical matter, if the replacement is not
identical, it should then be one using the Intel 815 chipset used in most
Gateway P-III systems. Check the specs on the Jabil board to be sure.
