[SOLVED] mdsched.exe can't run on Windows 10

Basically, I've been trying to install Linux (Ubuntu?) on my Dell Precision T3600 desktop computer. I bought this used, and I was told there were issues but it was only $20 so I couldn't complain.

Moving forward, I have swapped out the hard drive as that had lots of bad sectors and the pc constantly restarted (I was told that could also be related to the HDD). I now use a SDD. However, I'm still having random reboots and issues with installing Linux (it installs, but can't load on the boot menu).

I was told to try Windows+R, then typing mdsched.exe on the run menu. However, when I restart my PC to run mdsched.exe, the computer instantly crashes and restarts.

That being said, does anyone know what this potential issue could be? What is the first thing that mdsched.exe examines that's could be causing the pc to constantly restart.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No, I don't know that particular program. You may find a description on MS pages somewhere.

However, you may want to test RAM first, as it only require a CD or USB stick with an iso mage:

Also, try to start the computer while disabling as many peripheral components as possible. This also include those you can disable via the bios menu.
You're kind of speaking about Windows+R and Linux in the same sentence, so it makes is unclear what you actually have done on that computer.

My bad :$

So I installed Windows 10 Pro on my PC which has been having a few issues (it was purchased used, as-is). I've since replaced the broken HDD with a brand new SDD. The computer randomly will restart.

I also installed Linux, and that won't boot at all after I fully installed it. I'm not too concerned about that though as I'm sure it has something to do with the hardware.

That being said, I was told to run Windows+R, then type mdsched.exe for the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. However, I restart my computer as directed so it can run the diagnostics, then when it loads the tool it can't even test 1% of the system.

Therefore, I'm not able to run mdsched.exe because the first process causes the computer to crash, which I'd assume means whatever that first diagnostic is, will be the issue with the hardware.

So I was mainly just wanting to know if anyone knew what the first run of mdsched.exe actually tested - RAM, video graphics, power supply, etc.

Okay thanks, I'll give that a shot... any idea which version to download for Memtest?

Secondly, I'm not crazy experienced, so where would I find disabling the peripheral components?

Thanks again!
