I tried downloading it, and it doesn't seem to be working. I was thinking it would just be the game download, but it actually installs the MTX download thing, and from there I suppose you will be able to download the game.
But it's not working for me. Maybe the servers are still messed up.

I remember Star Trek: Judgment Rites coming on about a billion 3.5" disks. Some of my favorite games of that era on 3.5": X-wing, Tie-Fighter, EarthSiege (like Mechwarrior), Gold Box DnD, Wizardry (I, II and III on 5.25 and IV, V, VI and VII on 3.5).
 
sweet! same day I finally decided to break down and buy a HOTAS for flight sims they release this free! to bad its finals week 🙁
 
I'm confused.
it says FREE download but yet you still need to buy the game.
it says to insert disk 2.
whats the point of downloading it from the internet when you can just buy the game which is required to play the "free" download anyway?
 
Finally got the download going after having to mess around with my router. It's nice to see bittorrent being used for legitimate purposes, shows that it's useful outside of pirating as the media continues to only focus on. I'm going to either need to learn the mouse/keyboard controls or pick up a new joystick. I haven't seen a sound card with a serial gameport in a long time so I think my old sidewinder 3d pro is useless.

This means you only did step 1....downloading the game...you need to go back into MTX, select mechwarrior under available games, and UPDATE....there are 2 updates I believe, so you may have to do it twice. MekTek has been around for a long time, and the "free no-CD patch" is the last of the updates for now.

I keep one windowsXP machine set-up just for this game and my old MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro...oldies but goodies....just upgraded to a couple x52's for the other machines....Midi gameports aren't even supported by MS OS's anymore, XP was the last....
 
We are very aware that some of you are having problems using MTX to download and install the free release of Mechwarrior4: Mercenaries. We are currently preparing a self extracting executable to install the game without using MTX.

This new release will require a new download, but should alleviate any of the issues of installing via MTX.

This new release will contain some bug fixes for Mercs, and we will prepare a patch for those of you who have been successfully installing and updating via MTX as well as executable patches to bring any version previously downloaded, up to date.

Once this new version clears our beta team, it will be made available for download in your BitTorrent client of choice. Please be patient as this may take a few days.

We will continue to work on ironing out the bugs in MTX, until then, we will provide an alternate way to acquire the game and updates through the self installing executables.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

MTX File Extract and Patch Utility

Important MTX Update:

For those of you having difficulty with our MTX client we are providing a MTX File Extract and Patch Utility.

This utility can be used to Extract and Patch your free Mechwarrior4 installation should you have difficulty with our MTX distribution client. This utility must be used to install patches in sequence therefore you should not patch out of order (example: .0017 then .0018 then .0020). For all new installs you must install the "all to .0017" file first.

This utility is accompanied with a Readme file which are encouraged to read.

You can download the utility http://mtxgear.mektek.net/mtx/beta/SetupMTXExtract.exe.

You can also download the MTX files via your favorite torrent client if you wish to not use the beta MTX client:

if this is avaiablke for free downloading why does the link time out everytime i try to download the game now???
