got it waiting for winxp to boot, taking a long freakin time... here it is and here i go

I assume that my next step is to try to insert the Linksys CD and try to get it to run

the end

IM LOOKING AT THE MANUAL ON THE CD
I cannot seem to get the setup.exe on the CD to run for a very specific reason: it is for win98/winME/win2k

So what does it suggest for WinXP?
Just drop the card in and winXP will recognize it and ask for the CD

good, good, good

**** Step 4 ******

A If wireless security has been
enabled on this network, you will
see a wireless security screen. If
your network utilizes WEP (Wired
Equivalent Privacy) encryption, the
WEP Key Needed for Connection
screen will appear. If your network
utilizes WPA Personal (Wi-Fi Protected
Access), the WPA Personal
Needed for Connection screen will
appear. If your network utilizes PSK2
(Pre-Shared Key 2) encryption, the
PSK2 Needed for Connection
screen will appear.
WEP Key Needed for Connection
Select 64-bit or 128-bit.
Then, enter a passphrase or WEP
key.
Passphrase - Enter a passphrase in
the Passphrase field. This is casesensitive
and should not be longer
than 16 alphanumeric characters.
It must match the passphrase of
your other wireless network devices
and is compatible with Linksys wireless
products only. (Non-Linksys wireless
products, require a WEP key to
be entered.)
WEP Key - The WEP key must match
the WEP key of your wireless network.
For 64-bit encryption, enter
exactly 10 hexadecimal characters.
For 128-bit encryption, enter
exactly 26 hexadecimal characters.
Valid hexadecimal characters
are “0” to “9” and “A” to “F”.
Then, click Connect and proceed
to Step B.

DO YOU SEE WHY I IS FRUSTRATATORICAL??

Well I followed the instructions on how to install in winxp

IT WORKS!!!

im currently using the connection of my house on the PC

congrats for the suggestion

I approve :):):):)

Its 11:30 EST here in NY 😉

I have downloaded several win updates and then a big one which one can only assume is Service Pack 2.

Its installing now.

basically it all looks good from here on, that is UNTIL tomorrow night when we will begin to do a little of the programs checking to find out which programs have to be updated/reinstalled.

Okay then, all I will let it do tonight is un::::::::::::::::::::::::;

BAD THING:
okay bad thing came up now
Windows File Protection says that files that are required for win to run well have been replaced by unrecognized versions. Win must get the originals.

C:\\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386/controls.man
is not available
contact your sys admin or intert WinXP KB900725 Source Files Now
3 choices: Retry, More Info, Cancel

im looking confused, but still optimistic, gonna click retry now, okay nothing changed, the same issue is there:

CANCEL:
i clicked cancel, a new window opens saying: Windows File Protection-
You chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versionns? YES NO

duh.. 😉 it says it may comprimise stability not for sure. Ill click YES keep the malwar-ish ones 😉😉😉

what can you do?,,,

It continues to install the Sp2
more in 10-20min (or sooner if something goes sour)

Service Pack 2 is installing now.
But remember, we arent done until all of my programs work just fine.

Thanks so far, I wont be back until 6:50PM Eastern Standard
G'day

I think that by installing SP2 or sometimes drivers you overwrite system files and Windows panics, so look them up on google but are probaly ok. dont interferwith SP2 install or will really mess up the PC.

I gotta go out now (Callout Job www.pc-callout.biz ) but will be back on later

Good luck

Ok its monday afternoon.

I just booted and uninstalled a bunch of annoying programs that I use.

I just wanted to note that Windows loads 2-3 times slower that it used to be. I get the screen before the login screen with the 2 colored borders above and below and with the win logo: it says windows is loading. It loads but very slowly, I assume that SP2 will clear this up.

I made a list of what I did that night with the ERRORED ram
Basically, programs that might have become corrupted: "*" indicated that I installed this app
All of my Protection Apps
Nvidia Forceware *
Bluegears OXYHD drivers *
F.E.A.R. * (already uninstalled)
3dMark05 *
3Dmark 06 *
Itunes
Mozilla Firefox
Azureus
DAEMON Tools (for some reason not in Add/Remove Programs)
Sonic Record Now (w/ Sonic DLA) Uninstalled
WMP11
Aim Triton
A couple of MP3s and AVIs

So what I want to know if I can reinstall these programs from the same .exe's that I installed them from (most importantly 3dmark05 which is 270mb)
For the large majority of these files I have the .exe's backed up on CD and USB Key. It should be ok to install from these locations right?
I would doubt that I have to mess with the media files right?

About the video and sound drivers, should I just rewrite over the existing drivers or attempt to clean them as in that guide and use Driver Cleaner Pro and the such? Basically rewrite simply or the full-out-way?

winXP is running the SP2 Setup Wizard does anyone know how long this should take? 10min/30min/1hour???

All come back and lets finish this thing, ok?
Once 3dmark05 works as well as every other app on my PC, I will know that everything is ok.

Ok, I must say, I did mess with the SP2 install this morning. I had to go and it was installing real slow so I just clicked cancel. I then displayed cancelling installation for an hour. I ended the task, it said it stopped responding. I shut the PC off neatly. Now when I restarted the PC winupdate came up as b4 with no problems.

If you insist that I committed a heinous act, I will do a system restore back to when I first repaired it. Either that or *yawn* another repair.

It 'seems' to be running ok now though, just painfully slow: the progress bar on the setup wizard is maybe 8percent in. It says that it is Creating Cabinets. Under details it says that its Running Processes before Install.

Heck if it doesnt move faster... Is this normal?

I would really do a Fresh install but if you persist

Run SP2 first takes about an hour but on your system prob <Much> longer ( i normally apply SP2 to a fresh install of SP0 or SP1)

Uninstall the prob apps and reinstall

Some apps have a seperate app to remove reg entries etc

I really would do a Fresh install or with Dell prob a recovery partition/CD

Because you didnt use Zone alarm/autopatcher/Spyware blaster S&D you prob have malware by now which might stop SP2 anyway.

Please do a fresh install it is best trust me.

I'm thinking a fresh install will now be quicker anyway cos of all the issues you have so get your system back to OEM and start again as per my orig big post, Not being rude but your system is now unstable, corrupted, confused and probaly infected!

Sorry not being rude.

Why would my sys's security be comprimised?

All of my protection apps (zone alarm, AVG, Spybot, Ad-aware) are in the same state from before the repair: that is updated and fine.

I am confused though, the Windows SP2 hasnt progressed any more from 30min ago, its in the same spot. What should I do?

I am not ready to give up yet on this Install, so dont focus on making me do a clean install. According to 4Ryan6 that would just get me back to where I started at the beginning of the re-install, except that I would lose my data.

So, my options are to wait and see if the SP2 install goes, or do another Repair, OR to do a simple System Restore to when I first Repaired the PC.
The last option is the easiet BIG FIX. I still have confidence in my install.

Okay, the SP2 update still has not progressed any more. My CPU utilization is hovering around 50 percent with most of the usage in one of my cores (ive got HT)

Im thinking about a reformat reinstall like you suggested. I checked out autopatcher, but Im a little confused as to what to download. I will not use a torrent though, only off of a server.

A little help with autopatcher would be great, also should I try to cancel what my PC is doing? Its going nowhere.

ok will get auto patcher link

http://www.autopatcher.com/downloads/

choose the November install Download it and install but DONT run it

Download the December and Januray again install (Dec first) then Jan then Run autopatcher

You dont have to do torrents just pick a mirror (here in the U.K i get European mirrors so no good for you!)

Remember install all three but only run it once the jan update is installed.

A Full reinstall is different from repair install i.e everything is wiped with a full install with no crap hanging around from old install.

All pc's get Malware even with lots of security (why i reformat every 3months)

You need to confirm memtest is happy or the system will be eating windows files.

tell me if this is ok:

I started downloading the Full Jan 2007 Version from Mirror by Cachefly.com
its 299mb, im 20percent done.

Is that file ok?

Fine, I cancelled it

Should I get the lite or full version as according to your instructions??

Please stay at your PC, waiting 20min for a little answer is getting annoying
no offense

the end

I think that cachefly mirror is in a Forign language, damm it i knew i should have paid attension in school! (i may be wrong might just be from a forign country.

You need the November from one mirror the Dec from another and Jan from other, Maybe just get the Nov (full)and with firewall you be good to Windows update the rest.

I always go for the 4th in list <<<<<<<of the XP>>>>>> mirrors for downloads (4 is three below what most peopl choose)

p.s try spread betting if you have fast connection so you get say 4kbs from one and 6 from other then cancel the 4kbs one
