Memtest86 wont finish testing RAM

I was testing my ram using memtest84 (latest version online)... the test would start but after a few seconds my system would reboot without completing the test

What possible error (problems) is likely the cause of this senario?

Please help!!!

@OvrClkr... Hi once again... this are my specs


CPU: AMD 4000+ (2.1 Ghz)

Graphics: Inno3d 8500GT (1gig)

MB: MSI K9N6SGM-V
BIOS VER: Latest 1.12 2/23/09

RAM: 2x2Gig kingston KVR800D2N2 5-5-5-15-20 (1.9V min voltage my MB can supply) I tried running at different timings, but it is still the same.

Plus, the BIOS detects RAM at 4096MB but Windows XP would only read the RAM at 3.25Gig and at Windows7 RC it can detect 4gig but would say that only 3.25Gig is usable. BOTH OS at 32bit

All of my slots are working fine.. I tested them and so are my memory modules -tested them(RAM) one at a time using memtest.

But if I install both modules and run mentest... system reboots w/o completing the test

XP can only see 3.25Gb max so that is fine.

As far as your 4GB failing memtest, that is unusual since you already said that you have tested each stick individually.

Is your Ram frequency at DDR2 400 in bios?

Yes, Bios can detect my Ram at DDR2 400 (800 Mhz ddr). But due to CPU limitation, which has a 10.5 clock mutiplier and a memory divider of 6, the maximum frequency my CPU can handle is 351.6Hz (703.2 Mhz ddr) at normal stock setting.

What I mean is that my Bios can detect my RAM's maximun frequency but can only allow a lower frequency due to my CPU limitation. I can't overclock my CPU since it is not supported by my motherboard.

Thus this frequency limitation the cause of the problem or can there be any other cause?

I have Win XP Pro 32 bit and my system only reads 3.25Gb of ram. The reason for this is due to the OS not being able to allocate all 4GB. In order for your system to read 4GB or more you need a 64 bit OS.

Are you able to at least raise your FSB?

Unfortunately that's the highest FSB I can get... But I'll try installing my Vista Ultimate 64 bit... I'll post as soon I can get results

A good news and a bad news!


You were right, running at 64bit, the system can allocate all of my RAM's capacity. I'm now have a 4G RAM but my problem with memtest is still the same...

no problem,

another thing I would suggest is running an instance of prime95 for at least a couple of hours just to make sure your system is fully stable.
