I love how people on this site seem to speak for so many with comments like "business will completely reject windows 8" and "no one will buy into metro". You all must have your fingers on the pulse of the world.

Eventually we will have 1 button somewhere located on the screen that you cannot see but need to hover your new invisi-mouse over to be able to click which allows you to do every function of the UI all at once.

They call it windows infinity.

the logo is just a big 8 sideways that you cannot change or remove from your background.

Enjoy HELL!!

[citation][nom]guardianangel42[/nom]Linux will likely see an increase in support...[/citation]
I doubt there will be much change with Linux (they still need to get their act together; think Ubuntu Unity, Gnome 3, etc), most will just stick with whatever version of Windows they are on now.

The sad thing is that MS probably knows how many people hate the metro interface on the desktop and probably still won't give customers a choice.

[citation][nom]willard[/nom]They'll get indignant about just about anything, won't they? Can't count how many times I've been downvoted for pointing out the incessant whining about how technology doesn't cater to their every whim.[/citation]

I don't think anybody is expecting MS or any other company to cater to our every whim. For me, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, it's about moving forward and making enhancements to a UI to make it more useable. What MS is doing is going backwards in both aspects of a UI. Removing the sleekness factor AND the useability factor. What they've done with Metro is a HUGE step backward in both these aspects and it will fail because of this. Furthermore, I think people are down-voting you due to your lack of comprehension in this matter and your tendency to insult others. Make a comment based on critical thinking skills, or at LEAST common sense, and I'm sure you'll find a lot more green thumbs.

[citation][nom]iamvortigaunt[/nom]There's also a security gain to be had with this approach. Also, after a certain point of revenue, they decrease their take to 20%. Also, a central marketplace gives exposure to developers as well, as it provides a central location to sell their apps. Why do you think so many 3rd party merchants choose to sell on Amazon and eBay, despite the cuts these companies take?[/citation]

I wouldn't mind if they had a Windows app store. I do mind they're forcing it on users and breaking Windows into Metro (that's pretty much useless for desktop productivity applications) and desktop (soon to be in legacy-land). And they're doing it for profit and control, not because it's going to give a better experience to users.

I don't think aero is cheesy or dated looking but I think I prefer the new look judging from that screenshot (I mean other than that stupid ribbon and lack of start menu). The no-nonsense matte look is cleaner and more professional but I'll probably be skipping windows 8 anyway based on what I know of it so far.

Okay, so far I am seeing horrible GUI with Metro, and now they take Aero out which made it look awesome.

DONE!

I'm sticking with 7 completely and not even TOUCHING 8, even if it has DX12 support I'm avoiding it like the plague.

They are doing the smart thing, when win 8 comes out lets see how many people disagree with way win 8 is. I remember when 7 came out, people were disappointed about them not reverting back to XP style after the vista fail. Well, 7 has been good so far.

All I am saying is, don't hate on win 8 too much before the FINAL version is released and have used it for a while. Then state your firm opinion.

Windows infinity is what will happen when windows 8 falls over

I don't mind the style of desktop but I do hate the proportions, compared to the windows classic UI the task bar is about twice as high (and displays no additional info) and the title bar is about 50% taller and also displays no additional info, this is a waste of vertical screen space

The metro crap needs to go, it is just too useless, the metro UI takes up the entire screen but the content (list of programs) takes up at most half of the screen space and zooming out to see more icons does not do a wrap, instead it just zooms out and you get a line of icons that takes up very little vertical space, that is just a very inefficient use of screen space. the windows 7 start menu displays more content in the corner of your screen than metro displays taking up the whole screen

and the windows classic (2000 style) start menu displays even more content in less space than the windows 7 start menu.

older startmenus were designed to be screen space efficient since they were designed around a time when you were likely to have a monitor at 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution and could not have a large amount of wasted screen space from oversized items.

the metro crap also requires more work to get to the items as you have to more the mouse around more since you are working with the entire screen instead of the corner

So we have to buy it and use it for a while before we decide if we should switch? Lol

Windows 8 will work exactly like the Consumer Preview. If you hate the Consumer Preview, you'll hate Windows 8. There's not much they can do from now to release, except fix critical bugs, test and tweak the UI (slightly).

[citation][nom]mirage1974a[/nom]The real reason is that tablets don't have the horsepower to run Aero, so they had to dumb down the OS for everybody. Way to try to downplay advances in a UI Microsoft.[/citation]

Cynical Shenanigans.

When you flip on Aero it uses hardware acceleration to render windows. It uses no more or less CPU+GPU if those windows are translucent. Windows 8 will indeed use hardware acceleration. This is just for aesthetics.

I like aero, it looks clean and crisp to me, like ice or glass. Now it looks like xp with sharp edges instead of rounded ones, and a different forward and back button icon.

Luckily, Windows 7 has mainstream support until 2015 and extended support until 2020. No Windows 8 for me.

It seems odd that the last time M$ was able to release two consecutively decent OS's was going from W95 to W98. As we've seen in the past, there is no need to worry about using the past gen OS. For example, I used W98 up until XP had been out for more than a year (totally skipping Millenium) and then used XP until W7 had been out about a year (totally skipping Vista). In all that time, I really haven't run into any situations where I was unable to use any software that I wanted to use. I don't see that trend changing. I imagine I'll be due for a new OS a year or so after W9 comes out (as long as the UI is usable and I can run the software I want to run).

How is CoD and FAILdows 8 alike? Hey... you got it? We will be using the PREVIOUS game/OS for the next 10 years* until they stop bullsh$&ing us.

*(CoD 4 and MW2.5, Win XP for Vista, and Win. 7 for Win. 8)

For being tech people and changing with the times I would assume most would try it atleast before saying its a flop... Lol in the end I guess we are human where we just hate change. Sure without a touch screen I doubt i will like Metros features but Ill still try it before saying its a flop. As most would say with "dumbing it down" the simplest way is the best way. I actually like the idea of the windows button being an instant "what do you want" button.

In professional opinion I would say yea this is less of a business targeted OS. It obviously had tablets and personal use in mind. I personally think having my game on my TV while using a touch screen to run my media and other stuff while playing is an awesome idea. Thats just my two cents, now im ready for all the negative votes i get for being pro 8 😛

I think aero was one of the best things from Win7 (vista) 'cause it made Win look very trendy. Microsoft is just giving us thousands of reasons to skip win 8; I think it'll be just another Win 2000
