Hi to everyone I’m new in this community.
As I started University I wanted to update my prebuilt hp p6 i3 2 gen, by mistake I bought i7 2600k version.
Option

1- buy the i7 2600
2 - buy mobo for i7 2600k ( with overclock supp.)

I would like to go with 2 option so I can overclock and add a gpu ( 1080 ti ). My budget is limited for few months( already spent for uni, accommodation, iPad……).
Which mobo is best and cheap? + ssd ?
Thanks very much. 😊

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

My budget is limited for few months
What might that budget be?

You might want to look into a Z68 chipset motherboard but considering you're working with an HP prebuilt, it's highly possible that your case won't support aftermarket boards.

Might want to mention the SKU/model of your prebuilt HP, otherwise we'll be walking blind. Perhaps you could get the i7 to work on your prebuilt, perhaps, no guarantees...mind you!

Also,
I would like to go with 2 option so I can overclock and add a gpu ( 1080 ti ).
That's a waste of your money if you want to add a GTX1080Ti to that 2nd Gen i7.

P67/Z68 or Z77 would be your best options. Not likely to find any Z75 boards. You'll just have to look around for one on the used market, no specific recommendations.

PCIe 2.0 capable CPU with a high end PCIe 3.0 card, not ideal. 1080Ti would have been contemporary with the i7-6700k or newer. Something with PCIe 3.0 would be my minimum recommendation. i7-4790 would be decent and let you re-use your DDR3.

Model no: p6-2318el
motherboard : joshua intel h61

I7 2700k won’t work in this unless there is a way to do it.

  1. go for i7 3770 30 £
  2. mobo ?£

For case it’s not a problem I’ll get one.

A)Is it worth with this mobo as it prebuilt with limited options?
B) future upgrade GPU ( may be needed for 3d mechanical engineering program)

Budget?? I really don't want to spend that much for this PC as I want to save and build a new one.( if this upgraded satisfies my need maybe I don’t need it)

Z77 again, or the older boards for LGA1155, since you have a 2700K sitting around you could use that to perform the necessary BIOS updates on them to make it work with the older boards. But they probably don't support PCIe 3.0 again.

Z87/Z97/H97/H87/B85 for a 4th gen chip. The newer Devil's canyon chips would need the 90 series boards to work out of the box like the i7-4790.

There also also 4790 for around 30-40£
Seeing H97 motherboards as low as 35£

Though this refurb is probably safer:

How much is the amount to said budget?

In a nutshell, you're dumping money into a platform that won't net you much in return, i.e, your return on investments will only go towards negative. You're already going down the rabbit hole with the thought of buying a new case.

a| no
b| it's 2022, that platform you have is a decade old unit. It was once an office machine.

Yeah I agree with you.
But if I spend 100£ and it would be usable for office work, browser is not that bad.

Is it possible to make work this cpu with this mobo ?

otherwise I’ll try to sell it (bought for 25£) and get i7 3770 and an ssd. Maybe after Christmas I would be able to build a new one
