model # corresponds to frequency?

hello, I have a basic cpu question: Does a cpu's model # always have the same frequency?

for instance, my Athlon xp 1600+ -- I see under My Computer properties that it runs at 1.4 Ghz. Does this mean that all 1600+ run at this frequency?

Only till they are properly OCed.
All of the early xp chips were multiplier locked, and ran @ an fsb of 133. Each designation ran at it's own base speed.
Some would start at 3/4ths rated, because the fsb had defaulted to 100.

Does a cpu's model # always have the same frequency?

No. AMD doesn't base the model number just on the frequency alone. Things like cache size and FSB can also affect the #. While <i>most</i> of AMD's model numbers will be unique, some do overlap.

For example, and <b>AXP 2600+</b>:
1) <font color=green>2133MHz @ 266MHz FSB w/256KB cache</font color=green>
2) <font color=blue>2083MHz @ 333Mhz FSB w/256KB cache</font color=blue>
3) <font color=red>1917MHz @ 333MHz FSB w/512KB cache</font color=red>
