hello, i am a tech enthusiast but know little about component power. i recently received an mSATA SSD and my old pc has a mPCIe slot. i know that some motherboards support both types of cards interchangeably but mine probably doesn’t and i’ve read that the powering is slightly different.
.. is there any risk of damaging the SSD putting it in a mPCIe slot or is an mSATA-mPCIe adapter card necessary? thanks

It likely won't even physically fit. The keying is different.

Get a mSATA -> SATA adapter.

Plug it into a regular SATA port on the motherboard.
