MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Problems

I just started a brand new computer build. Specs:

Mobo - MSI K8N Neo2
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3200+
RAM - 2 Corsair 512 DDR PC-3200
Video Card - GeForce 4 Ti-4800
and so forth...

After I assembeled it, I tried booting to install a fresh Windows XP, and
it won't get past the BIOS screen.

I thought the keyboard first, since it wouldn't light up at all. But I
swapped it with 3 other keyboards known to work (USB and PS2), and nothing
changed. I tried swapping power supplies, nothing. I tried swapping RAM,
nothing. So I sent in the motherboard and got it replaced with the same
exact model. When I tried that mobo, same thing happened. I tried
swapping everything again, nothing worked.

Anyone have any ideas?

Did you install a new hard drive as well? It sounds like your getting
to the BIOS stage but from there its not finding anything to load.

Hard drives are generally partitioned and formatted by the OS you
install on them, and will give you such messages as "Operating System
not found" which isn't particularly helpful but at least lets you know
it's trying to boot from the hard drive. If you installed a new drive,
that information wouldn't be on it yet.

By default, the Neo2 attempts to boot the hard drive first, so this may
be the cause of your problem.

Go back to your BIOS and select:

Advanced BIOS Features > 1st Boot Device

set this to CDROM so you can start your XP CD.

set the 2nd Boot device to boot from the Hard Drive.

An interesting feature I recently discovered on the Neo2 is that if you
have more than one CD/DVD drive, the BIOS will boot from any one of them.

Hope this gets you going.

I have a completely blank, new hard drive. But I have the WinXP install CD
in the drive to try and boot from that.

But the computer won't even allow me into the BIOS screen, so I can't
change any settings. The computer won't recognize any keyboard.

Are you using a usb keyboard ?
If so, you might try getting your hands on a ps2 keyboard and see if it will
recognize it.

Support for USB keyboards is enabled by default in the BIOS, but it
sounds like your system isn't progressing far enough through the boot
process to initialize the keyboard.

On the back panel you'll have a set of 4 LEDs to indicate the machine
status. Pages 2-22 and 2-23 of your manual tell you what the light
patterns mean. Initializing the keyboard is actually step 5 in the power
up sequence. The manual says the LEDs are green and red, however on mine
they're more like orange and red so be cautious there.

One other thing to try is unplugging the cables going to your drives. If
a cable happens to be bad or accidentally reversed, some boards will
identify the problem as a chipset malfunction.

Wireless keyboard & Mouse - can't be seen by DOS

I Had this same problem with my new K8n Neo2 and fond that i had the
RAM config wrong, I had a 512 in the gray #1 slot and a 512 in the
purple #2 slot and it would not boot, Make sure you have the gray slots
filled first DIMM #1 and DIMM #3 and try to boot.

He would be right if the OP had a K8T Neo2 ;-)

Is your 3200+ a "Winchester" CPU, i.e. one of the new 90 nm versions? If
so, you must have bios 3.2 or greater. See the manual for updating the bios
direct from a floppy, i.e. even if the machine will not post. I think that
you copy the bios image to the floppy and hold down Home and Ctrl when you
power up, but I am not 100% sure about this. Also - do see what information
you can get from the diagnostic led's.

I have no doubt he meant well with the suggestion, but I felt it needed
clarification as the poor fellow has enough problems getting his mobo
working without hunting for a non-existing BIOS for his board :)

Sorry about that - yes, 3.2 is for the K8T not the K8N, which is 1.40.

Easy to mistake that considering it's just one letter difference ;-)

Got the same problem on a MSI K8N nForce4, both SLI and Premium
mainboard, found this link;

http://www.netwerken.it/_knowledge/1764.html

ASUS mainboard (same chip) doesn't have these problems the confirmed
after contact.

ok, after getting rma number I was about to pull the motherboard out
and send it back. I thought I would try one more thing first and so
all I did was removed the battery for right over 15min. I read that
on there site to reset the bios if there was a problem with the cmos
jumper. So ignore the cmos jumper and go straight for the battery
because it worked for me. The computer allowed me to boot straight
into bios and change the neccessary dram config to be compatible with
my memory. At that point it booted up great. Good luck to you.
