multimedia video clips?

I have a project I want to pitch by annotating the Microsoft Word outline
with video clips.
Is there a particular codec that all Windows 2000 and XP systems are
equipped with?

MS MP4V2 should give you pretty good results, without needing any
special codec to be installed for Win2k or XP.

Thanks. What encoding programs exist? Any stand-alone cheapies?
