My fan is REALLY weird Please help

I'm building for the first time and my fan won't latch onto the ZIF Socket thing.

Is the metal in the fan supposed to be curved upward the way it is, or is this a defect? To me I can't see it being possible to get both sides latched on.

By 'the metal' I mean the metal connecting the two latches that are supposed to go on the socket.
In the middle, inside the fan, it is bent upward

What mobo, CPU, heatsink do you have?
Usually the CPU has a little sheet with instructions and pictures, but it's kind of tricky attaching the fan even with the pictures.
Just make sure you don't force anything.

Would it be bad to push down pretty hard on the fan (and therefore the processor underneat) if I could get that latch on?

It's a duron 1.8ghz and and an asus A7S8X-MX mobo.

By fan do you mean your HSF (heat sink fan)? This is used to cool the CPU.

If this is what you are talking about then you are probably doing everything right. I am not sure what you are installing but assuming that this is a stock HSF on an AMD A64 processor then yes, the metal does have a slight upward curve to it. These can be very tricky to get on (very tricky). Make sure you follow the directions that came with the HSF and if you are following the directions and it still isn't working then push harder. Get one side of the clip hooked on, and then you will really have to push quite hard on the second one to get it to click for you. Once you hear the click you can pull down the lever to tighten it on even tighter. Good luck and don't be afraid to give it a little bit of force, they are meant to fit very snuggly, and they do.

Yup what cpu do you have, some are more fragile than other. P4 and A64 have heatspreader that make them more robust.

Also it is normal for the metal to be bent. Next to one of the latch there is a little flat opening, perfect to fit a flat head screw driver. You need to securly place de HSF with one latch already atached. Then making sure the heatsink doesnt move and that you dont apply to much pressure on it, press down with the screwdriver and you shoudl get it to latch.
Sometimes you need a good amount of pressure but you need to be carfull, not to crunch the cpu and not to have your screw driver slip!

You can always go to a local shop and have them do it for you for a few bucks...

Wow... I was just going to laugh at you for buying that system, but you actually got it at a fairly good price. Not bad for a workstation type rig.

Don't get the local comp shop to do it... and you can use a screw driver that works but you can also use brunt force, push on the edge (on the metal) not directly ontop of the fan part and you will be fine. Just put some elbow grease into it.

Yeah... let us know how it goes... I'm sure you won't have any problems... they take quite a bit of pressure, I have had some really stubborn ones in the past and never ever broken a CPU or a mobo.

I should clarify this before somebody calls me on it. I have never broken a mobo while installing a HSF, I have however cracked a mobo almost in half connecting a stupid IDE port with too much pressure

Noice...i've had a screw driver slip off once...gouged up the mobo pretty nice...had some pretty shiny copper starring back at me...=/

Never even tried it again, i just drop kicked it and ordered a kr7a (back in the day...). I'm not sure i removed the cpu first either...
