make sure that the cable is properly connected with the HDD... or connect your HDD to some other computer....!

Go in your BIOS to see if it is seen there, if not double check the cables and I am guessing it is an IDE HDD since there aren't much 40GB SATA drives, if it is IDE then check the pin placement
