My windows fixit says my sound is muted but idont know where

I downgraded to win xp sp2 from sp3,and my sound packed up and left. I now have none at all. I have tried toreplace everything as far as drivers,etc....but,still no sound. I did the chipset thing, uninstall/reinstall,etc...no sound. So, I ran a windows fix it and it said my sound is muted. Ive checked everywhere but no places are muted. WHAT NEXT??? Im going crazy!

Any clues in Device Manager? Do you have a Sound Manager in your Sys Tray? What sort of machine?
