N00b?

im looking at a new build, and am wondering what psu to get
ive already used the extreme (lite version) calculator, and still cant decide what brand & watts

here it is:
CPU: i7 920 (OC to 3.8)
CPU Cooler: Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
MOBO: gigabyte ex58-ud4
GPU: gtx 295
RAM: Corsair triple channel 1600mhz 8-8-8-24
Case: NZXT Tempest
HDD: 640gb WD Caviar black

i get around 720W, so therefore id go with the 850w corsair.
but if i add another gtx 295 in, it goes to 885W. So that means around the 1000w+ range?
is this right, or am i reading the internet site wrong? i want to make this rig slightly more "future-proof" (man i hate that term), so should i get the bigger PSU?


NB: what fan should i put on the CPU cooler, and also, if i postpone this as long as november, when the new GPU (dx 11) come out, what will be the ~approximate~ energy use of them (in watts)?

first there isn't any such thing as future proof, however there is future resistant.

next what's your budget?

because in some places you can get dual 4890's or two 4870 X2's for about the same price as a single GTX 295.

no offence, but i dont care about what kind of GPU (gtx 295 is just an example)...

i just want to know whether its worth "future resistant"ing my PSU for sli (or crossfire X) or just to go with 850W, and have very small chance of sli (or xfire)

No, you'll need a 1000w for Quad SLI/CF.

and the DX11 marketed GPU's will be 40nm and use about 120w I guess for the top end versions, maybe more. But ATi's current lineup already has the architecture to support DX11 so it might be cheaper to just get a 55nm ATi graphics card now and you'll just lose a bit of speed, 15% max since the 40nm phase is going to be quite short if Nvidia wants to stay in the game.

I'd jump to the dual 4890's, they can run off a 850tx. But, yes 2 gtx 295's would be a good 1000w.

kk... i think ill go ati.... use less power/ watt (yes?)
and ill get a corsair 850w, cheapest best quality PSU @ that power
