Need help. About CPUs

Hi, I currently have a P4 2.4, but I dont think its going to cut it for my gaming needs in a couple of months. Its the weakest part in my gaming machine. But I dont know how to check what the highest processor my motherboard can handle. It probably said on the site, which was gateway, it is a 500s series from 2003. Since then I upgraded video card to a Gforce 6800 GT and a gig of RAM. So what I need to know is could I buy any P4 higher than 2.4.. say 3.0-3.4 and it will work with my motherboard? I dont know much about Processors.

The info you provide for your motherboard is "vague". But I'll guess that's because you don't know what you've got.

Download the free copy of Everest Home Edition. Install and run it, it'll tell the motherboard (or at least the chipset). From there, use google and you'll prolly have no touble finding an article or review which will tell you the max cpu supported

If it is a Gateway computer, try contacting Gateway and asking them what you have. Tell them the model and ask what came with it. Not sure if that helps. GL!

Alright thanks. I have figured out that I have an Intel 845GE Chipset. Perhaps one of you more knowledgable could give me advice on what the highest end processor I could buy. Here is the info on my chipset

The short answer is 3.06G-on the 533 front side bus.

Besides the processer, consider more ram-this helps a lot.

The chipset supports up to 512 ram cards of ddr 333 0r 266 depending on your motherboard.
