I am trying to fix up a slow, old HP computer and am looking for a new CPU which is compatible for it. It currently has dual core processor which I'm tryna bump up to a quad core however I'm not sure as to whether a quad core will actually work on my computer with my given motherboard.
Here are the specs:
HP COMPAQ MICROTOWER DX2420 https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c01711392
CPU: PENTIUM DUAL E5300 2.6 GHZ
RAM: 4GB
MOTHERBOARD: MS-7525 https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c01386897
CHIPSET: INTEL G31 EXPRESS http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/G31_Express.html
SOCKET: LGA 775

I'm currently looking to get a Q9XXX or Q6600 or maybe a xeon, any ideas if they would be compatible, Thanks

Solution
There is an extended CPU support list here:
http://www.pc-specs.com/mobo/MSI/MSI_MS-7525/1469/Compatible_CPUs

However I cannot guarantee the functionality of these without a BIOS update at least. Obviously the socket is not the only identifier if a CPU is compatible. All other specifications stipulate that it doesn't support anything outside of that list.

Also whilst the list above may indicate some more compatible CPUs, it doesn't mean the motherboard is totally equipped to run them.

Yes seen that however my question is would CPUs outside that list work which are supported by the same chipset and have the same socket type such as the Q6600 as I'm looking to upgrade to quad core.

As you can see, your particular LGA775 board does not support any quad-core CPUs:

Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
  • Core 2 Duo E7xxx (Wolfdale-M)
  • Core 2 Duo E4x00 (Conroe)
  • Pentium E2xxx series (Conroe)
  • Celeron Dual Core E1xx0 series (Conroe)
  • Celeron 4xx series (Conroe)
None of these CPU options are good for more than light web browsing or so.
You could try to run a Q6600, but there is a good chance it won't work since HP says that board doesn't support it.

Hi. I bet it works since from what I read the Kentsfield architecture (Q6600) there are two Conroe processors and as this architecture is already accepted by your board I don't think there are problems. Did the test work?
