I have an asrock Z170M Pro4S motherboard and I was wondering if a Samsung 980 m.2 500gb ssd would work on it or not? Looking at replacing the motherboard with a better one soon but would that m.2 go on it or no?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

If it's the regular 980, then yes it'll work with your motherboard. Just make sure that the BIOS on your motherboard is up to date prior to dropping in the SSD. If you're looking at the Pro version, might want to wait until you get a new motherboard that supports Gen4 x4 to get the best out of the SSD although the 980 Pro is backwards compatible with a Gen 3 slot..
