Question Need help with psu

I have been collecting parts 1 at a time and only need the cpu and gpu and found out you can build a pc without them to test if the parts are dead or not so thats what i did. When all parts where together the pc had no sign of life but when i pulled out the big 24 pin cable and tried to put it back in it started to work for a few seconds but only when the cable was partly in and wouldnt work when was fully plugged in. When it held half way in the system, it would beep and leds of my fans would also flash on and off to the beep( the fans would spin fine). It kinda sounds like the starting of an old car but im not sure if the psu is broke but would appreciate any advice.

Sounds like a problem with PSU connectors, please do not plug them in and out when PSU is under power !!!!! Never, never, never. If you didn't blow it by now you certainly will.

ok wont, so should i return the motherboard or the psu?

If you can't use and check either one on another known good and compatible system, I would RMA both.
