I am new to the board and was wondering if and where I can find some help. I am trying to help a friend with a freezing problem.. Running win 98 and sometimes it freezes on boot at the windows 98 screen or sometimes will boot fine the freezes later on. I was thinking it might be ram so change out that, I have tried Pc100 and 133 cl2 and cl3 that didn't seem to help. Replaced video card.. Didn't help. all in all the only thing I haven't done is replace CPU. It is running an old althon 700 slot A. I replaced the motherboard with an ABIT... Can't remember the model number. But, I am lost.. Is there any good software to run a check on this computer. It is driving me crazy.
Thank you so much .. Not sure where to post this problem let me know. thanks
Gina

Did you change the motherboard without reinstalling Windows? That could potentially cause problems. Also, Windows 98 isn't known to be the most stable. If you use your computer regularily and/or install and uninstall a lot of software, then you can expect to need to reinstall Windows every couple of years.

If you're going to reinstall, consider Windows XP. It will be out in a couple of weeks and looks like a very user-friendly OS.

It Sounds like you need to get a upgrasding and trouble shooting manuel. go to libary and get one check the optimization chapter about win 98. Here ar some quick tip 1St type msconfig at the run prompt then check slective startup and go to startup folder and uncheck mark all programs this will free up resources.

I did turn off all the things that were running in the back ground. So its just the bare min running. I have reinstalled windows and I am still getting hang ups and freezing. I did run PC check and it would freeze everytime I did a ram check so I changed out RAM and the PC check will run through now. Could it still be software problems and not hardware?!?!?!?!
Thanks again

explain a little better about the ram the mother board should either be pc100 or pc133 if it is pc100 you should stay with it . They say you can use pc133 it's backwards compat but it is not really . Lots of people i know have got into ram problems with buying the cheaper pc133 and after i told them they returned it and went back to pc100 no more problems. also when you reinstalled windows did you do a clean install by formating not fdisk

ok.. the RAM that I ended up using was PC100 CL2 worked great. No more ram problems. And then I just changed out the processor and guess what.. SO FAR problem is solved.. But now with the new board thats in there I have an error on the PCI bus mastering... How do I fix that.. Gee if its not one problem its another..
Thanks again...

It's possible the CPU cooling fan has failed and your processor is overheating. Make sure you have plenty of cooling in your case. I would recommend having someone double-check your Bios settings on the new motherboard. Give us a complete list of specs on the system and we may be able to track the problem down.

One other thing, you may have a power supply problem. If you upgraded the processor to a faster AMD, you may need a larger one. Most AMD systems need at least 350-watts to function properly. And a high-quality power supply will save you tons of trouble down the road.

I will have someone check those settings to make sure. But I think they are all ok.. But you know how you can over look the small stuff.. Thanks for the help. I will let you know how it does..
Thanks
Gina

your right about the power supply thing, I totally forgot about it.. I will check and see whats in there and upgrade if need.

If you buy a PSU, I highly recommend Enermax dual-fan models. They cost around 15-20% more than others, but it's worth it for the added cooling, quieter operation and better quality power.
