I am currently having issues with my internet connection. This happened to me today while I was browsing the internet and the internet just randomly died, but then said it was still connected. I experienced this problem earlier, going through the typical troubleshooting methods. Eventually I reinstalled my ethernet drivers for my mobo and it fixed it for about three weeks, but apparently that won't work this time and now that I've reinstalled this time I'm getting a "limited or no connectivity" error and when I try repairing or disabling and reenabling I'll just get the same error.

My first attempt to solving the problem was restarting the router, but that didn't work. I have four other computers accessing the router fine, but mine won't. It's a Netgear modem/router and if my ethernet were registering properly I would have an amber light but instead I have a green light. So the problem isn't the router. I'm trying to figure out if I can connect with a wireless adapter without actually purchasing one, but so far I've had no luck in finding one that will work with the router or my computer.

The odd thing is sometimes I still have a connection, but a ridiculously slow one. I can ping to the router perfectly and when I ping to a website like google I'll usually get a 25% fail rate with the successful pings at around 100ms, whereas when I ping when my computer is working it's under 40ms. However, I generally can't log onto a website, though this varies (i.e. my google startup will work sometimes, largely in part to the cookies stored I'm guessing).

I tried system restoring the first time this happened and that did nothing either.

I have also run up to date MalwareBytes, AdAware and Avira Antivirus and gotten no hits on any of them.

So, in summation, does anyone have any theories on how to solve my problem or ideas of what might be wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Update: I tried using a wireless adapter and while it did find the signal and say it was getting it all full strength, the Windows connection manager couldn't establish a connection, once again giving me the "limited or no connectivity" error.

I believe so. Not 100% sure what you mean by this. Do you mean my connection in XP or on the router? It is on my computer and I assume so for the router as every connection works but mine and the other computers have similar settings.

Hi Wokhedinn,
I remember having a similar problem on an old buffalo DSL router. Once I got connected it felt like I was using dial up to surf the net. The solution for me was to update the firmware on the router.

This may sound daunting if you've never done it before but it's pretty easy.
First thing you need to do is find the model number on your router.
Next head on over to Netgear's downloads page here:http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/list
Then click the type of router you have (DSL, Cable, etc)
Click your model and look for a downloads tab

**You may also find a solution on the KB/FAQs tab of your router.

Let us know how everything works out.

To goobah: After checking, DHCP is enabled.

To stephenriddle: Thanks for the advice. However I don't think it's a firmware thing as it's not even like being on dial-up, I just can't get on the internet period. It'll say it's "slow" but it'll never load anything and give up after a prolonged wait. Plus, every computer in my house is working fine with the router...just not my computer and my computer was working perfectly before this happened.

Anyway, I think I'm just going to do a Windows Reinstall/Repair since I'm not finding anything that can help anywhere. I'm just guessing there's some virus or something that I can't find.

Any advice is still appreciated though.

Okay, before I do a reinstall of my XP I'm going to try and update my XP with a download from another computer onto that computer. However, I'm having a really difficult time trying to figure out how to do that. Does anyone have a solution of how to get the most recent update of XP that I could put on a flash drive and then install on my non-internet computer?

So, I've reinstalled XP, reinstalled my drivers, reinstalled (or tried) .NET framework and I've still not regained my internet connection. Now I'm thinking it might be a hardware issue. Could this be an issue with my motherboard? There's really no way for me to test this without taking my harddrive out of this comp and making it the primary drive on another, which I can't really do right now.

I'm quite desperate at this point. Any suggestions appreciated.
