Hi folks

Need some help building a gaming rig...here's what I've had in mind since June, just waiting for this card to release:

MBO GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6, iX48 + ICH9R, DDR2, zvuk, S-ATA, PCI-E, Cross, G-Lan, s. 775
CPU INTEL Core2Quad Q6600 BOX, s. 775, 2.4GHz, 8MB c., FSB 1066MHz, 64 bit, QuadCore
RAM, 4 GB (2GB + 2GB), DDR 2, PC-8500, 1066 MHz, MUSHKIN XP Series
SAPPHIRE ATi Radeon HD 4870X2, 1 GB GDDR5
HDD 1000.0 GB SAMSUNG SpinPoint F1, SATA, 32MB cache, 7200 okr./min, za desktop
Napajanje 750W, CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX, ATX2 v2.2, 120mm vent.
Super Tower, THERMALTAKE Armor LCS, VE2000BWS, ATX 2, crno, bez napajanja

What do you think? Anything to change?

Great build.

I think the DQ6 is expensive. A GA-X48-DS4 would cost less.

PC-8500 RAM is expensive too. If you're not overclocking you can get PC2-6400 instead (DDR2-800) and save some money. If you are overclocking, get the GA-X48-DS4 and a Q6600 OEM (not BOX/retail) and an aftermarket cooler. No idea which coolers are available in Croatia. Give me a URL and I can help you pick one.

looks very good. congrats on a great build.

couple of questions:
do you already have a monitor? and a dvd drive? are you planning to overclock?

I got a 22" Samsung LCD, and Liteon dvd.
Overlock? Yes , the proc, at first probably not by much maybe 300, 400 mhz...
But that case comes with Liquid cooling.

that is 1680 x 1050 res right? this is an awesome rig you are building but it appears you are building a rig that is ripe and ready to add another 4870x2 at some point. at that resolution you can pretty much max everything out with just a 4870. no worries, this system sets you up nicely for the future but you may want to consider a monitor upgrade? if you have the $$. or if you plan on having that monitor for a couple years you could save some serious $$ on some components. but i don't want to recommend that as it is a pretty pimp set up. :) :)

The "BOX" comes with a heatsink and fan, while the OEM comes without them and it's usually cheaper because of that.

There's also talk that the OEMs are better overclockers (lower VID), but I couldn't confirm it.

bdollar got me thinking. Your motherboard has 2 PCI-E x16 slots, so it will allow a second HD 4870X2. However, your 750W PSU will not allow it. (You should have 1000W at least for that, especially with water cooling consuming some power too.) You could downsize the motherboard to a P45 (P5Q, P5Q Pro, GA-EP45-DS3L, GA-EP45-DS3R, etc.) and save $100 or more. Or, if you want to add that second card later, keep the X48 motherboard and get a bigger PSU.

good point aevm didn't notice the psu. i think it comes down to make sure you either go all the way with this nice build (prepare for crossfire with better psu, and think about better monitor) or drop down on several things so that you will have a great build for your current monitor/setup that you will like. what you don't want to do is land in the middle. stuff that is too good for your monitor and some is ready for crossfire but others (like psu ) are not. am i making any sense? :) :) basically choose a or b but don't do part of both? 😉

Hmm yeah I guess you're right never even thought of putting two of those in haha but I guess maybe I could scrounge up a few $$$ for a 1000W but will have to cut down on some other things then.

here's the thing. you by no means have to. you could make some other changes if you don't plan to crossfire and save a good amount of money. but if you want to then definitely upgrade the psu. maybe go with the recommendation on ram 800 to save a little bit. also do you need a full tb of hdd space? some people have a lot of media they save but if you are trying to save a little money for better PSU that is a place you could do it??

Here's the list of PSUs certified by AMD for HD 4870X2:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/crossfirex_components.aspx?p=3

Careful though, only look at those rows where "Number of cards" is 2. So basically, the ones approved for two HD 4870X2 cards are:

[fixed]Manufacturer Product Retail Name PCIe 6-pin PCIe 8-pin Number of Cards
Akasa PowerMax AK-P100FG 1000W 2 2 2
Amacrox Freestyle AX1000-EP 1000W 2 2 2
Antec Neo Link 550S + Neo Link 650P 1200W 2 2 2 //ignore this one, it's about the P190 case
Antec True Power Quattro 1200W (TPQ-1200) 3 3 2
Antec True Power Quattro 1000W (TPQ-1000) 2 2 2
Be Quiet Dark Power Pro BQT-P6PRO 1000W 3 2 2
Enermax Galaxy EGX1000EWL-DXX (1000W) 2 2 2
FSP Epsilon 80Plus 1010 2 2 2
FSP Epsilon 80Plus 900W 2 2 2
FSP EVEREST 900W 2 2 2
FSP EVEREST 1010W 2 2 2
OCZ EliteXstream 1000 (OCZ1000EXS) 2 2 2
OCZ PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 1200W 4 2 2
Tagan TG900-U33 (900W) 2 2 1
Tagan TG900-U33 900W 2 2 2
Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W (P/N W0156) 3 3 2
Zumax ZU1050W (X4) 1050W 2 2 2
[/fixed]

Of course, something with similar parameters should work too, even if AMD hasn't tested it (yet).

I'm not familiar with all those brands. I would trust PC P&C, Enermax, Antec, Thermaltake, OCZ. The Enermax Galaxy is one of the best PSUs, for example. There's also a Corsair 1000W, with excellent reviews.

Hey again, OK I'm looking this thing over and basically I upgrade my PC once every few years, since parents buy this on a credit card and that means at lesat 2 years to pay it off, so I usually buy a pc good enough to hold at least 2 years. I rarely upgrade in the middle. So yeah I'm thinking one card will suffice till then, so I was thinking of downgrading the PSU to a Corsair TX650W. Is that enough for a single 4870x2? Apparently it puts out as much as 780W before it shuts down. I think it will probably be enough yes?
Thanks

You guys are buying a gaming PC on a credit card, and taking two years or more to pay it off, at 18% interest with monthly compounding? :ouch: You'll end up paying $300 or $500 in interest on a $1000 PC.

Not sure what the interest rates are here but I can tell you that PC costs a whole lot more than $1000, try more like $2500... Unfortunately yeah we're chock-full of loans already so credit card is the only option.

so shouldnt you stop buying things??

the interest rate is about 18% here or there so a 1000 pc will be about 1400 in 2 years!!!!

no wonder banker so such rich wealthy b(w)ankers!!!

It's not really under my control and while I'd love to explain it's really neccesary stuff and you can't get away with it differently here (let's just say we've been building a house all these years bit by bit and not all the credits have gone yet) but this is getting offtopic now.

Hot damn that's some nice build.
4870X2's starting to roll into the shops here, bring em on ! :)
Just lookin stuff over before I hit the stores...

The 4870X2...but I'm a hardcore ATi fanboy =) I might take nVidia if all the other cards somehow died out...nah I'd probably make my own graphics card 😀 Just kidding. But yeah, the GTX is hella pricey here and you know the best part is, the "price drops" dont make it here, as if the retailers just somehow decide to stick with the launch price and blindly ignore the fact that everywhere else in the world nVidia is dropping prices. I mean wtf.
In any case the price/performance ratio here hands the gold medal to the 4870X2 so I'm going for that, but like I said I'm team red all the way 😛

Whatever floats your boat :) Fanboys should get more respect than they do, IMO. They help companies survive when they get in trouble. That keeps the competition alive, innovation high, prices low, etc etc.

Here's a trophy for you:
[:turpit:2]

Thanks I'll put that right with the other ones lol 😀

And yes so far I've had a Radeon 7500, Radeon 9600 XT, and now I have
a Radeon X1800 XL. Why break the streak ? :) The only time I had an nVidia in my PC was when I thought my 7500 died, but it didn't, the AGP was just a bit dusty. Whew.
