ok i know this is probably a stupid question but what is the difference between a serial ATA drive and a IDE ultra ATA100?

the serial ata is more expensive but that coud be because there is less of them out there or because they are better?

SATA is a new interfact standard, IDE is the old one. There are no performance differences.

ATA/IDE drives are 40-pin and use a wide ribbon cable, SATA is a new standard and if you have to ask, your board probably doesn't support it.
