New Homepage Feedback Round 3

Page 4 - Seeking answers? Join the Tom's Hardware community: where nearly two million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
Nobody can really read or even scan a list as long as you present on any of the pages. Max is 8-12 items and most people peter out at 7 items. You put 20 items in Latest News.

I like how on the original home page you had a Graphics section ... and would prefer to see this blown up. Segmenting the content provides scanning points, visitors would scan the header, decide if they needed that info and move on.
I use your site to read reviews of hardware! Make that easier to find.

With these designs I'm not sure what the site is about anymore. What do you stand for?

Well, I'm brand new and just landed here. So far, I think the "search box" is in the right place, prominently displayed. So,what can I say, I'm an idiot. But good job, for what it's worth.

I'm not a huge fan of these changes but for the most part it just means getting used to something new and probably improved. However, what I absolutely cannot stand is that the latest news bar across the top does not show the most recent articles in order. What I liked about the homepage as of yesterday was that I could go to the page and see near the top the new article for the day and any I may have missed throughout the week. Now I have to click through the articles to find dates, scroll left and right to find other articles and have no idea if I'm missing something or not. What comes to mind more than anything is: What the hell!

I imagine that this is an easy fix and like I said earlier the rest of it is just getting used to the new and improved. But leaving the latest new bar as is is a massive fail.

Thanks.

ETA: Excuse me: When I said latest news I meant the horizontal Featured Articles bar on the new design. Pardon my mistake.

I hate it! Liked the old way much better

I come here to see the "Latest News" and "Featured Stories" sections. I hate the fact that I have to scroll to see the features. It doesn't make sense to have "from our other sites" be higher in priority than the new features on the site I'm actually visiting!

I think it sucks 75% IMHO, I prefer the old one, can u keep it as an "Classic"option. I thought it got messed up, when opened 🙁

I dislike the "Latest Articles" section - that should be like menu in restaurant, come and see - now it almost looks like annoying commercial.

What was wrong with the old one? It was great. I hope I can get use to it. (Still hate yahoo sports and can't get use to it 6 months.)

What happened to The Torque Report?

"Latest News" would be better on the right - can't beat that.

I was extremely skeptical during beta 1 and 2 that I continued to use the original site. Seeing that the new site is now permanently live I was quite intrigued with how it turned out! I like the horizontal pic-text nav at the top of the main content area. Also like that the articles are left-aligned. In short, very great layout. Won't be a fuss to get used to. Great work Toms and your web development team!

I dont mind the new page, nor did i mind beta 2 or the original.. Other than reordering the page... you didn't do much to change it.. you placed the same items in a different orientation.. IT still has the same look and feel as it did before and honestly its still a website cluttered with ads and other junk that make the browsing experience cumbersome and eye straining to locate specific articles.

I would suggest taking out some of the quick links that are tagged to words within the article text. I always seem to have issues with them closing with Chrome. The color scheme of Toms Guide is calm and clean and i enjoy that section of the website content much more than the main page.

No more Torque Report feed? Then I guess I'll just start visiting the Torque Report site and stop coming here.

I'm sick and tired of the site constantly changing! If you're going to do a "beta", make it by opt-in only! Stop forcing every iteration down my throat! When it's finally done, then change the site over. I still may not like it the new design, but at least I won't have to be constantly investing the effort to adapt to the flavor of the day!

On the current design (these are likely moot now because the site has probably changed 3 times since I started typing this!):

I only come here for the news items, so having them further down the page so I have to scroll to see them (on my 13" MBP) makes it painful. This is because the article scroller at the top is too big (vertically).

I don't care about the forums. Stop taking up the majority of the page with them.

I like the changes.. only thing I would say is to move the featured topics up to where the sponser spot is... would give it a better flow next to the top topics

Hey Toms....

Please do not go in the same path as that of semiaccurate.com 's fate. Older version was best, and easy. I was always able to find things whenever I needed with ease. I believe that your reviews and news are much important than Forum feeds, and I liked the red colour for important news.

If you want to improve, do better than old and please dont force us to choose this version. The Older version is MUCH MUCH better. I hope you understand my feelings, s this is one of the sites I visit very frequently, mainly due to the easy navigation and good feel. Dont get carried away by Live feeds and user comments. We are here for news, and reviews, more than Live forum feeds

Only to be on topic, I'll add that the settings thing for the number of news articles to show isn't remembered after one visit using Firefox Beta 6.0 (as of 7/21, Win 7 Enterprise, 64 bit). (I clicked the setting, waited till it loaded the articles, then closed the tab. Opened up a new tab, opened up a different website, then went back to Tomshardware. Maybe it's a problem on my end, it's why I included the info; to be more thorough)

Maybe this is a rant, I'm kind of leaning towards yes, my bad.

The spammers in the comments sections, I think that should be a huge priority to get rid of in this new version. I know it'd be a constant war, but I, at least, think it's worth it.

I have to admit, I didn't read all the other posts before this one, so if that has already have been mentioned, sorry (if that counts for anything).

Could you put the option to revert back to the old version if the user has an account? Doesn't matter if it's hidden away in a settings sub-menu. Then the die hards would even be happy!

I'm sticking with the new one, but if it's feasible, it may solve some problems.

Did you get rid of the old home page completely?? I came onto site today too see this god awful new version with no choice to go back to the original!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please bring back the old version I cant stand this new one. Layout sucks and hard to see info without a bunch of f'ing scrolling. It is not good web design to force people into scrolling a bunch too see information.

It almost feels as though you redesigned the home page to be more friendly to lower resolution screens (like tablets) by putting much less information on the homepage and forcing a bunch of clicking/scrolling in order too see what you want.

FYI a lot of people that visit Toms have high definition computer monitors and do not need everything blown up to huge sizes and condensed. I loved being able too see so much info on the old home page without having to go search your site for it.

I understand the need to cater to these lower resolution devices but dont force it on everyone. Make the new home page be configurable (like you had it for a while) so the users who want it can decide for themselves.
