I'm a long-term Tom's fan, and I kind of like the new layout. It's "different", but in a way it makes sense in that it has a format similar to the one other blog/info sites seem to be using (or moving to).
I do have a few suggestions, though....
The one thing I've always wanted to see in any site like this is a customizable home page. To explain: Tom's has grown over the years to include a virtual smorgasbord of info from a variety of areas. Right now I have to bookmark and/or RSS feed the various sites in, and it takes time to find things that interest me.
What other larger sites let you do is customize the home page to include areas and/or topics of interest. In this case, I think a revised version of the "old" layout would be best, only let ME pick what sections I want to add below the latest news area.
Maybe I would like to add CPU's & 'Motherboards', "Video Cards", and "Software Downloads". That combines my three favorite sections from two different sites (Tom's Hardware and Tom's Guide).
Even better would be the ability to add sections that are based on a topic tag (in addition to sections that are direct reflections of existing sections elsewhere on the site).
Finally, the one thing I've never seen but would LOVE to have is the ability to customize the "latest news" stream based on both topics of interest as well as EXCLUSIONS. I like the latest news section because it gives me a chance to browse a lot of items. However, there are some topic areas that I'm just not interested in. It would be very nice to say what topic tags I'd like to exclude from the news stream (I'm not very interested in Linux, so for me that would be a good exclusion).
So, my "dream" layout would be some kind of 'latest news' section at the top where I can customize the stream, along with a layout of customizable sections below that where I can assign my own criteria for a section (based on existing content sections from the various Tom's sites, or by topic tag).
Either way, though, this new layout is acceptable, and also consistent with other sites I visit (Lifehacker went through a similar format change last year, and it turned out okay).
Just my 2 cents; either way, though, I'm still a fan.
