Question New PSU, motherboard has 18 pin slot but PSU has 20+4 cable connector, PC wont turn on

I have a old hp workstation, it has an 18pin slot for the psu,

The psu is a new evga 600 watt which has a 20+4 cable power connector,

I connect the cable to the 18 pin slot on the motherboard with two pins sticking out on the side

When i turn on the pc from the button the back the fan sometimes turns on for half a second then nothing.

Anyone have any ideas, i dont have a paperclip to test the cpu

You need to use a 24-pin to HP 18-pin adapter cable to use a standard PSU. The wiring may be completely different, in which case forcing the PSU on with the paperclip test could well fry your board and/or PSU.
