actually, the new driver made things much worse for me.....

My Specs:

Biostar TForce 590SLI
4GB Corsair XMS DDR800 RAM
AMD 5600+ X2
One Maxtor SATA 2 Hard Drive (OS Drive)
2 Maxtor SATA 1 Hard Drives in onboard RAID 0 Array
BFG Geforce 7950GTOC 256MB
POS Creative X-FI Xtremmusic

Before the latest patch, the old drivers were giving me the BSOD because of the 4GB+ RAM issue. After the patch, I either have a screech/hiss the whole time the sound card is enabled, or I get the pop when a sound trys to play. It really is pathetic with these guys.

To fix the issue, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and uninstalling all versions of the driver(there were some old ones I wasn't aware of) and then reinstalling the new driver. Neither method worked. The March driver still works pretty good although I still get blue screens.

I swear, the first company that comes up with a working, good quality sound card for Vista has my money for life.

ouch dude that sux, for me i have ultimate praise, it solved my snapo crackle and pop with 4Gig and also openal sounds( well at least BF2 and thats most important to me ), for the first time in vista it was full surround sound and had bass for the weapons etc.

just as a matter of interest is your XFi on a different IRQ to everything else?

I dont blame creative, i lay the blame entirely at M$ for such an architecturally stupid implementation of sound in vista

yeah i guess i don't know enough about it to know who to blame, i've never had this many problems with a piece of hardware. Hands down the worst technology I've ever had, and definetly the worst of the four Creative cards I've owned.

How do I check what IRQ the X-FI is set at? I've never had to do that. I've always just put the components together after some research in a magazine or online and with a little tweaking the system would run good.

edit: quick question, are the asian drivers different from the North American ones? I only ask because the only issue i had with the last drivers was 4GB blue screen and since the drivers you posted fixed your 4GB issue than I might try those next.

i doubt the drivers are different, i never had BSODs with my x-fi( ive had about 3-4 BSODs in vista but they've gone away )

for the IRQ's open start/All Programs/accessories/system information and expand hardware resources/IRQS make sure your xfi has its own irq otherwise id suggest windbg load the dmp file generated from your BSOD and make sure its blowing up in the xfi drivers and not something else

I dont know much about vista but to me it sounds like your getting a driver confict perhaps unistalling any creative products and drivers then using Vista equilvelent to drivecleaner pro then reinstalling the drivers will solve your problems.

anybody got any recommendations for a vista driver cleaner?

OK, something must be up with my hardware. This is a little over my head so try and bear with me.

First off, the X-fi is sharing the same IRQ as my video card, which is IRQ 16. How do I change this?

Second, IRQ 80 to IRQ 190 is used by Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. Is this normal?

Last thing, I have four really weird IRQ ranges. IRQ 4294967290 to IRQ 4294967294 is being used by PCI standard PCI to PCI Bridge. I have never seen IRQ ranges this high, although I have never seen IRQ ranges over 20 before. Is this normal.

Any help, tips and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the windows debug is the same every time. I get this "Probably caused by : hardware ( win32k+b6860 )" although the process that causes it is usually different. This time it was the Windows Media Player

Also, under conflicts/sharing the sound card is sharing the exact same memory addresses as the PCI Standard PCI-toPCI Bridge

check your mobo documentation, probably changing to another PCI slot will solve the IRQ issue( some people dont have any issues with the shared IRQ's while others do ), also uninstall the driver and reinstall it

I dont know any decent Vista registry cleaners myself as i havnt had to use one yet

no info in the Motherboard manual, I'll try another slot when I get back from work tomorrow. I'll report back with the results. Thanks for the help man.

If anyone knows anything about those bizarre IRQ's, please let me know. Thanks.

Update: Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5 works in windows vista. I did a driver wipe following their instructions combined with moving the X-FI to a new PCI slot and the card works now with the new drivers. No hiss or static whatsoever.

I think you were right with the IRQ conflict. Only time will tell how the BSOD issue pans out, but I am happy that the new driver finally installed

Thanks for the help guys.

actually, the hissing is back again. Now sometimes I have hissing when I startup, other times it works fine. I give up. I'm starting to lean towards the problem being the card itself. I think it might just be defective.

oh no, can you tell if changing the pci slot helped anything at all? are there any bios updates for your mobo that may help?( i know for my evga theres a new one with xfi fixes )

I found that in entertainment mode listening to music with CMSS-3D enabled it sounded truely horrible, i disabled it and the sound sounded 1000 times better for some reason now its inverted and on is good of is bad, must be some bug

Mute absolutely anything youre not using like line in, mic etc.

Nah it doesn't look like it did. THe only thing the X-FI is sharing now is all its memory range with the PCI bus, but I'm pretty sure that is normal.

I tried to update the bios because my version was created in October of 2006, but I ran into a bit of an issue there as well. Unfortunatetly, it seems like they discontinued my board or something. First off, finding the Biostar site that works is the first step, then I looked in the downloads area of the working site and looked up my MB, Biostar Tforce 590 SLI Deluxe AM2. In the downloads section, it is just empty and says no downloads available or something. The worst part is, I checked some other random models to see if they had downloads and most of them did.

Plus, I'm a little skeptical of the versions that are out there right now. It had a .BST file extension, which apparently is a Bibtext file. I don't even know what that is. Nothing else is plugged in to the card right now besides the Logitech 5.1 system I have.

So that's my situation right now, the bios is really the only thing I have not tried.

im at a loss at this stage, my sound still isint 100% right from a few games tonight, its better but still lacking and theres some funky volume thing going on, could be your issue too. Id start posting on the creative forum

Bibtex is used for creating a bibliography with Latex which is pronounced "Lay-tech" ( http://www.latex-project.org/ )

I'm sure the bios update is not a bibtex file and it is just a coincidence that biostar uses the same file extension as bibtex files.

I got the x-fi music with xp, not one problem, tells me vista is the problem just like all new OS on their first year of release. You will see MS will have a patch to fix it.

I remember the days of my 5.1 gamers card. I had to change the IRQ for the pci slot. that fixed the issue of sound, crackle, pop and some time later 1 million patches of xp the problem was fixed.

I have been using YouP-PAX drivers and software for my X-Fi card, no problem with them so people might want to look at these for an option.

thanks for the link, i heard that these fix issues for some people alright

Also anyone looking for a vista driver cleaner i spotted one in the downloads section on Guru3d earlier

My games are sounding better, but theres a bug whereby the CM3D toggle is incorrect in the gui and i set incorrectly games sound total crap
