I decided to build my own system about a month ago, and after reading the forums here for about 2-3 weeks I went on ordering all the stuffs needed last weekend to build my middle of the road AMD system. Yesterday, I received my opteron 144 from mwave and I can see that the seals on the box has been broken and inside is quite dirty with lots of dust particles. The CPU markings has the following:

OSA144CE5AT
CAAGC 0427TPMW

Clearly this is not a new unopened box cpu. From what I can gather, this CPU was made on week 27 of last year (2004). Most CPU I see on the forums recently are more of the 0540 or later week code. I don't have my motherboard to try this out yet, so my question is should I return this CPU and get a new one? I can't believe mwave are sending me old cpu that could possibly be a return from an old system from 1 year ago.

Thanks for your expert help,
TT

If it was me, I would return the CPU if you bought it as retail. But if it said open box or OEM then your basically stuck with it.

Sorry I did not mention this but it was supposed to be a new retail version with heatsink and fan. Or atleast when I ordered it, there was no mention of opened item anywhere on the description. I am going to call mwave. Now I have to wait 2 weeks to get the CPU, this is very upsetting. Thanks for the suggestion.

TT,

I purchased from MWave a while back, and my purchase lasted for about a year. (19 in monitor- cRT). Are they telling you it will be 2 weeks before they can send you a new one out???? If that is the case you may want to stand up for yourself.. cause it sounds like you are getting railed.

I just called mwave, and after waiting for about 15 minutes on the phone, they said that they will send me a rma in the email and a new cpu should be sent out within 24 hours. The lady was kind of rude and a bit rushed, does not sound very reassuring to me. Let's see if they will follow through with the promise.

My motherboard is scheduled to arrive on Monday, so I hope I get the CPU soon after. Maybe I should have gone with ZZF or Newegg instead. Thanks for your comment.

Newegg would have been a better choice. I have been shopping with them for about 4 years now. And they have never let me down. Even if it was my fault, they replaced my item (As long as I was choosing my words carefully.) and service was always excellent. I hope it all works out for you!! AND MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You do know that you got a s940 opteron, and not one of the s939 chips right? The C after 144 means s940. If you want a 939 chip, it will have a D instead.
There also seems to be 1 to few chacters in that line.
For instance a OSA144DMX5BN would be socket 939 (D) v-core of 1.3 (M) have a max case temp of 95c, (X) and have a meg of cache (5)

ZZF (formerly GoogleGear.com) and NewEgg are both fine choices. I've dealt with both of them for years and have purchased thousands of $$$ of parts from each. They both have excellent prices, too. What I normally do when I want to build a PC is spec out all parts (except the case) on each web site, shipping included, and then go with whichever is cheaper. For me, 4 out of 5 times it's ZZF because of their free 2nd day shipping policy on light items. I don't spec the case because I can normally get that cheaper elsewhere. For example, I just built a PC 2 weeks ago. I got all the parts from ZZF and the case from www.c-source.com It's a nice Antec SLK3800B case with 400W power supply. It was $90 with free shipping.
