No 3DMark2k increase from O/C

Hi!
Im kinda disappointed.. I spent a couple of hours installing a blue orb and ramsinks on my GF2 GTS (arctic silver all the way) just so I could overclock the sucker. Results? I managed 230/400 and got no improvement on the 3DMark2k!

PreOC: 5478 3dmarks
Post: 5410 3dmarks

I retested several times and tried various ocs from 200/400, 225/375, etc etc. all scores were around 5400.

This is on a Cel566@850, 256M ram, Gf2gts 32, Asus P3BF. Is this a limitation of the processor? Thats my guess so far..
Any info appreciated :)

I thought 230/400 was pretty good. Not that it helped...
Anyway, the Celeron is fun to OC and is only $50 to replace if it fries. Keep the P3, Im bucking for a Tbird next time.

p.s. so.. you were agreeing with me? (about the processor)

since you have ramsinks go all the way to 420 mem clock speed. Also what displya settings do u use for 3dmark? Cause some turn down trilinear to bilinear filtering also u can see which sort of optimisation for your celery works best.

Something is not right. I overclocked my Geforce256 SDR from 120/166 to 150/210. My scores went from 4930ish to 5644. That's on a Duron/KT7 overclocked to 1007 mhz. You should be able to do much better.

All scores being nearly the same at different levels of overclocking is very suspicious. Make sure VSync is turned off for Direct3D during testing.
 
Hi! Thanks so much, I was afraid I was crazy or something. Ill post the compares for the uno/c and o/c scores not that that will be interesting, Im sure.
I did recheck and the vsync is off. I tried changing agp size with no effect. I tried unchecking and checking all the options on the nvidia advanced options tab (d3d & opengl) with no effect.
I use the default benchmark 10/7,16bit. Ill try the bilinear filtering, though wouldn't that be cheating? I mean in so far as comparing apples to apples? You're right, though, it may be a better solution for the Cel.

One thing I do notice is that fill rate ALWays increases and is proportional to the o/c. Everything else is up for grabs. At least that tells me that the o/c is working. I think it means the rest of the system is not up to the task. :) Your Duron, even if at equal clock speeds, would kill my little Cel :)

Rick_Criswell has a good point and you noticed, as well, now that I have re-read your message. Maybe it is your CPU.

Let's make things easier on the Celeron. Increase the resolution (if you can with you monitor) and switch to 32 bit color. Overclocking your video should make a difference here.
 
Your processor is definitely the bottleneck man. Until you get a faster CPU you probably will never see an improvement.

Thanks, I was thinking that was the prob. I've un- o/c'ed the card and am running it stock now. It should be good until I upgrade the mobo sometime in the future. Im thinking Tbird since they are so cheap. I don't think i'd get a p4, and definitely not if it used Rambus. Thanks for your help... I really like this card, even at stock speed :)
 
wait for the 1300's or above. They should be more overclockable since they're supposed to run cooler. Otherwise just get a duron.

I'm getting the SAME problem, GOT a TB1.2, don't think that a bottleneck. anyway, ULTRA 3dmark2000 score is staying at 7300 area, with w2k. default and OC. id on't get it.
 
Hmm.. that is strange. A Tbird 1.2 is definitely no bottleneck. I wonder if one of our other settings is off.

I think actually my processor is maxed out, since my 3dmark score compares very well with other Cel850's, but your mark is too low. I looked at the Tbird 1.2's with Gf2 GTS and the top ones range from 8600-9200 or so.

Have you checked the usuals? AGP aperature size, 4in1 drivers, etc etc? and detonator3 drivers? Something is amiss. I'm sure you'd be much happier with a score around 9000.
 
I think w2k is the problem here.
I compared w2k / w98
on my computer Tbird 800 GeforceDDR

w2k is performing 30 - 40% less than w98

i know, it weird. ok, it's under W2k, got the newest 4in1 driver, and the Det 3 1080. then Geforce Tweak Utility. so i OC the CARD. <---question do i have to restart???? after TEST new setting, then OK.
 
I think you should only talk about stuff you know. Win2K is not a problem. Just make sure it is patched up. One thing that would slow down 3DMark scores is CAS3 RAM. This will put an 1100 w/GF2U at only 4400 where it should be scoring in the high 8000's minimum.

Here's a list of drivers I use for my 1000MHz GF2 GTS 64MB combo (I got mushkin ram at cas2) good for at least 8000 points.

Win2K SP2 will be out next month apparently it is to increase gaming performance even further. Unless you have a GeForce3, you shouldn't be using the 10.xx drivers. The fastest drivers I've seen in Win2K are the 6.67's and the 7.52's, although some have seen bad renderings with the 7.52's I haven't yet untill I cracked my GeForce2 apparently the 7.52 drivers don't support the Quadro2.

I'm not sure about this.. I don't think you're supposed to have to restart, but I've heard many people say you should restart, so do try that. Also I agree with Igottaknife that det 10.8 isn't ideal.

Follow the links there that he provided, and patch your system up... looks like he provided a lot of good stuff there.
I'm a cel566@850, win98 right now, so I don't know from 4in1 OR w2k. I've heard w2k is much better than wME but thats all I know..

Oh and most likely the scores you see are at 600x480 and that was what I was reffering to with the scores I mentioned. If any bottleneck exists in your system I would think it would be the RAM. If you got a hot video card then make sure you use the Direct3d hardware pipeline instead of the Athlon optimized one. Post agian and tell us what you get. I feel bad that I didn't warn you of this but before installing the 4.29(v)a drivers uninstall any other 4in1's or MS HotFix you might have done for your VIA chipset (especially the Hot Fix) otherwise you'll be up all night reinstalling Win2K!!!!
