I only know this much bout the psu: 350 watts and presumably 10 years old :/

Well, your power supply is pretty much trash at this point and there's not much point in trying to upgrade the parts you have. Since you don't have much to lose you could try an adapter to see if it works. If it fails it should just shut down the system but there's always a chance things can get dammaged so proceed from here knowing the risks invloved.

Don't buy an adapter, if it doesn't have the required connection for the GPU then it's not worth the risk of damaging those parts.

Basically, even on a good PSU, an adapter is a bad idea. And your PSU isn't good.

Get a better PSU.
