When I select Multiplayer>Player Setup I get the titled error message. I can
setup my player name and model with autoexec.cfg but would like to do it the
"right" way.

Hi Kent,
For some reason, Q2 can't find the model files located in
Baseq2/Players. Check the directory, it should contain subdirectories for
Male, Female and a few others.

I think this came up a long time ago and the baseq2\players directory must
contain only model sub directories - if there are any plain files in that
directory, move them elsewhere or q2 model menu will get confused...

That did it. I deleted everything from \players directory but \MALE and
\FEMALE subfolders and now it works.

Thanks,
Kent
