I kind of strayed off from monitors to HDTV's... They tend to save me more outlets and space, eliminating the need for separate speakers... They also offer larger screens, ranging from 32" to 55".

[citation][nom]killerclick[/nom]3D has been coming and going for decades. I wasn't impressed 20 years ago and I'm not impressed now.[/citation]

I agree, nothing but a gimmick...unless they do 4D! o0oo0o0o

Whatever happened to the 3D monitors that used parallax displays so that someone sitting in front of the monitor would see perfect 3D without glasses or drop in lighting. They were coming out back in 2005. While this isn't good for TVs because of the wide viewing angle it would be great for computers where there typically is a single user right in front of the monitor. Back in 2005 they were a bit expensive and were only around 15" or 17". By now I would have thought they'd be bigger and cheaper.

How this would work in a 3 screen environment where the side monitors are at an angle I don't know.

However, I would have thought this technology would be far superior to any glasses technology and would have easily been in mass production by now. What happened and where is it???

This form of 3D gaming will fail. Spending a couple of grand to run games at 30 fps is a joke. Wearing glasses is a joke, the whole thing is a typical Nvidia proprietary scheme to rort gamings. And for people who think they can just buy a 120Hz TV to eliminate bezels you cant.None of them are compatible, even some of the 3D Tvs are not compatible. Obviously Nvidia are doing the rounds of the tech websites to plug this technology. A few websites have the same kind of article on Nvidia 3D surround.

I fail to see how this technology is so amazing all the sudden. AMD is miles ahead of nvidia in multi-monitor gaming and catalyst drivers already support stereoscopic 3d glasses. I think implementations follow if stereoscopic 3d on desktop is even a good bet. Dramatic fps loss and headache comes first into my mind with stereoscopic 3d.

I get a headache from Avatar and that was done with big money. It looked good though, but I would put my money to somekind of hologram views, but maybe we have to have this class based era before that... Just hope that they can do something to make it less irritating. Technology seems to have a habbit to become better and cheaper, so I would not be too worried about the price at this moment.
All new says that oled will be cheaper to produce than traditional lcd-display, so after 5-6 years (when they are huge amounts of Oleds) this may be mainstream.

If surround display setups want to be taken seriously by the general public plain and simple the price requirement need to come down and the bezels need to be removed.

Haha I just found out that when my grandparents just met, they went to see a 3D movie like on the second date, with the stupid 3D glasses and everything! That was in the 1950s. Wow, that's some high tech stuff!

Some things bother people that some people dont care about. Case in point, i hate cheap blizzard games, many drone fanboys love em. Some people are bothered by the bezel, others are not. I played bfbc2 at 5870 x 1080 and loved it, what people who use the "just get 1 big monitor" dont understand is that the ultra wide screen looks much better for gaming, imo, then just one standard widescreen. Your parfrial vision in 5870 is amazing, and going back to 1920x1080 makes you feel like your playing the same game with horse blinders on. And because your eyes focus on center front, after a few mjnutes of gaming u forget the bezels are even there. Ill twke 3x 24" monitors over 1x 40"+ any day. It doesnt even come close.

Like the sega dreamcast smell-o-vision?

On the topic at hand, 3D gaming is a FAD! However, the three monitor set up is pretty cool. I thought I would hate bezels too but I got used to them very quickly especially since you don't look at the side screens dead on usually (they are like peripheral vision). However, I did not get used to the 3D gaming.

3D gaming is good for one thing: it limits how much you play. The glasses would just piss me off after 20 minutes. I never did get a headache; it was just really annoying to wear the bulky glasses. And if you looked away from the screen the glass spaz out for a bit plus the occasional microstutter equals lame gaming. Also, no one can watch you play (like if you are trading off) cause the screen is jacked. To top it all off, the 3d effect is "cool" but not great.

The 3 monitor set up, however, I ended up really liking. Originally, I thought I would just test it out, be like "oh ya this is kinda cool". Instead, I still use it, especially on FPS games. What I would love to do is set up 3 60 inch Mitsubishi DLP TVs (as low as $2400 for all three) using my 7.1 surround sound system. That would be incredible...

3D gaming won't be universal until glassless 3D monitors/tvs are available affordability.

Obviously, 3D surround gaming will not catch on. People have better uses to spend their money. Geez you have to have a minimum of 2 GTX 480s to do it! Plus 3 x $400 monitors, $200 glasses...too much except for the most diehard gamers.

Hows about instead of buying into Nvidia's Gimmicky crap that forces you to use expensive 120Hz monitors you could go with a 3rd party solution. . . iZ3D's setup that is over a hundred less per monitor, and Newegg's been pulling promotions for those monitors left and right up until recently. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824859001

Best part is, you don't HAVE to buy expensive glasses. SO if you wanna play some game that you can split screen on you can just wear a pair of shades. And it looks sweet as honey dripping... well you get my drift 😉

I don't know how many of you are bashing this before you give it a try, as I was skeptical at first too. First off, videos footage taken of the 3x screens from 10-15 feet away to show the whole thing don't do it justice in actual application.

When you sit down at a normal PC chair, keyboard and mouse in hand, with 3x 24" monitors a few feet away from your face, you don't notice the bezels because you got a whole monitor in front of you that your eyes focus on, and as you play games, you do quick glances to sides to check for enemies in BFBC2, or see how close you are to a railing on dirt2. This gives the feeling that you're more into the game, and have a lot more field of view.

You can not get this on 1 large screen. Try it before you bash it. I used to run my games on 1 42" 1080p screen, and i'll gladly take 3x 24" anyday now that I've played it and have seen the difference it can make in gaming experience.

As for 3D, its kinda neat, but I prefer standard vision for right now, and you can get 3x 1080p 60Mhz 22 - 24" monitors for less than $400. Anyone willing to shell out $500-1000 on GPUs should be able to afford 300-400 bucks worth of monitors anyway.

[citation][nom]reynod[/nom]I wish I could afford all of that hardware ... alas not.The Samsung 120HZ 24" monitor, glasses and GTX card cost us arond $780.Played it for a few days and got sore eyes.Gave it to the kids. They played with the glasses for a week. Now the glasses are in a drawer. Not much more to tell really. The whole experience with the glasses reminded me of:The yoyoThe pogo stickThe hat with the beer cans on top of it and the tubesThe Bling "Gaming" case with neons that I disconnectedThe SuperfloppyThe external CD BurnerThe ex-wifeAll terribly short experiences of delight (dynamic quality) followed by a feeling of bewilderment and a sense that I had been played by a consumerist market.C Wright Mills please save me ... from myself.Chris ... is there a cure ?[/citation]

From a practical standpoint, I was wondering if this "fad" would have that result.

So long as there is a bezel, there is no point to having surround in games. None at all.

Well, racing games could get away with it.

I think the bezels are less noticeable in 3d than in 2d. They're noticeable, for sure, but because your eyes are focusing at something not on the plane they get ignored after a while. Like when you're driving a car, the pillars holding your roof up could be seen as annoying, but truth is you're looking so far past those that you don't tend to even think of them. Now with 2d your eyes are focusing on the same plane and the bezels are much more annoying.

You can experience the 3D DARK VIDEO ASPECT Tom's site describes with cheap plastic 3D glasses (free) with Michael Jackson's "This Is It" exploit on your existing GTX200(+) and GTX400(+) nVidia cards. No need to buy the expensive baby-toy 3D Glasses nVidia is offering. It is too DARK is the theme -- YOU WILL LOSE IN Multiplayer with 3D will be another theme. I can't adjust and I'm irritated with these 3D glasses will be a party buster

That said, the 3 monitor support in 2D will flourish and be enjoyed. It will make you happy.

I am sure they can produce 3d without the need to have all these new devices. For instance, movies are usually done with 24-29 fps, and my screen refreshes at 60. so why cant I use the glasses on for that?
I want to use this but, I am not spending that much for it!

[citation][nom]killerclick[/nom]What are those lines between the screens? Oh yeah, it's the black plastic the monitors are made of! Three monitor gaming = FAIL.[/citation]
the human eye will ignore those during playing you won't even realize them

"Nvidia 3D Vision Surround: Is This The Future Of Gaming? "

I hope not. All these technologies mess with the eyes and while it is cool for a short while I dont want all TVs and screens to go this fake 3D route until they have something that is indistinguishable from nature.

I don't need all that resolution. You need to sit too close to even be able to resolve all those pixels, besides I'd prefer better performance with all the eye candy than insane resolutions. Size does matter though, and I'd like a big screen for stereo 3d. Personally I think a 50+ inch 1080p plasma would be perfect for 3d gaming. Alas, current 1.4 HDMI TVs only support 720p in a 60hz per eye format (framepacked).
Once nvidia's 3dtv play, and 3DTVs themselves start supporting full 1080p 3d (60hz per eye), then I'll buy into this tech.
