Kelper is out...:)

Now, which one is better for gaming: AMD 7970 or Nvidia 680 GTX, taking SLI and CrossfireX options in consideration? Despite the $550-600 price of 7970 for now, AMD will drop its price very soon...

Also, should we expect 4Gb version of 680 GTX (or perhaps 685 GTX:)) video card?

"Simply put, at 1920x1200, 2560x1600 and 5760x1200 the GeForce GTX 680 is the better value. It's $50 less, and provides either the same, or better performance as the competition. The Radeon HD 7970 is either overpriced, or underperforming, or both."

Check Tomshardware article about 680, it is yes more powerfull than 7970:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-680-review-benchmark,3161-20.html

but yes 2gb may be a little low for multimonitor purposes, i bet that soon they will be releasing 3GB versions of even 4GB, but didn't read anything about that for now, the future is imprevisible.

i'm not sure if AMD will really drop prices and if they do that will only show that they overprice their products a lot.

To bad there won't be 3gb versions....I think you mean 4gb...Also they won't be out for months. And why would you need 3gb? the tests have shown 2gb is plenty atm.

Solution

2GB is not enough for 5760x1200.

at least not if the game is using a lot of high resolution textures.

According to matto17secs graph, 680 GTX is slightly better than 7970. Plus it takes a pretty long time for AMD to deliver normal drivers for their GPUs.

i think that the benchmarks that the 680 is losing (Deus Ex there) happens because of the 2GB memory. and it will perform better with more memory, not saying it is not enough, but in some specific games you may lose performance due to lack of VRAM.
